🌈To mark the last day of #LGBTHistoryMonth 2025, we want to share our interview with Warren. He is a gay man from Malaysia who came to the UK to study in 1990, and made history in 2000 as the first #LGBTQI+ person to be granted refugee status in the UK on the basis of sexual orientation.
25 years later, Warren shares his story, and reflects on the struggles that LGBTQI+ people seeking asylum in the UK continue to face.
💙"We need more kindness and compassion instead of hostility, and to listen to people seeking safety here."

Earlier this month, we published a blog by a lesbian woman from Uganda reflecting on her journey from Uganda to the UK, the asylum process and the importance of LGBT History Month. Read it now: buff.ly/3CVJxt6

We are among the 148 organisations who signed this letter, condemning this government's decision to ban most people with refugee status from ever becoming British citizens.
We need a kind, caring and compassionate asylum system.
#RefugeesWelcome
148 organisations call on the Government to rethink measures to ban most refugees becoming citizens - no matter how long they've worked and contributed to British life.

We have been deeply concerned about the changes to X for some time now. The way content is moderated through automations and community notes, the reinstatement of hateful accounts previously banned for rule violations, and the removal of key safety features like blocking have all contributed to creating an environment that no longer feels safe. Misinformation and harmful content have become widespread, which goes against our values as an organisation.

Many LGBTQI+ people who came to the UK seeking safety are left with lasting trauma from immigration detention. This doesn’t have to happen to anyone else.
The government already has a policy recognising that trans and intersex people are at serious risk of harm in detention, but it’s time they extend that protection to the entire LGBTQI+ community.
With the policy under review, now is the moment to demand change!
This marks the end of our series on immigration detention. We hope it’s helped you understand the devastating impact of detention and the urgent need for change.
🌟 We can change this now, as this government is reviewing its policy on who is at risk of harm in detention.

Nobody benefits from detention, except the private contractors who are paid millions 💰 of pounds a year to run the UK’s detention centres. There are alternatives that support people to understand their immigration options while living in the community.
With alternatives available that are more humane, cost less and do far less damage, this government’s choice to continue to lock LGBTQI+ people up in detention centres where they aren’t safe is indefensible.
✔️ We have a chance to change this now, as this government is reviewing its policies on who is at risk in detention.

Joel is a Nigerian LGBTQI+ and refugee rights activist, who organised Nigeria’s first Pride in 2019. He came to the UK to seek safety, but the Home Office detained him when he arrived.
Detention puts LGBTQI+ people like Joel in a dangerous situation where they face bullying, harassment and abuse.
It doesn’t have to be this way – this government is reviewing its policy on who is at risk in detention, and they need to recognise the dangers LGBTQI+ people face.

Today, Joel explains how the UK is the only European country with no time limit on detention - an inhumane practice that destroys lives.
The last official inspection of Harmondsworth, where he was detained, found that almost half of the people locked up there were suicidal.
No one should be locked up indefinitely in a place they aren’t safe. LGBTQI+ people are especially at risk in detention, yet the government has so far refused to acknowledge this.
💪 We have a chance to change that now, as this government is reviewing its policy on keeping people safe in detention.
