THE COLLAPSE AND DANGER OF A NARCISSIST Donald Trump has become such an overwhelming presence in our lives that his psychological profile has been extensively examined. His behavior has led many observers to describe him as a malignant narcissist — a destructive personality driven not merely by admiration, but by the desire to humiliate and destroy anyone who challenges his supposed greatness. Such individuals believe ordinary rules do not apply to them. Their willingness to cross moral boundaries gives them additional weapons in the struggle for power and influence. How someone displaying these characteristics became president of the world's leading power will occupy historians, psychologists, sociologists, and political scientists for generations. Trump's demonstrative disregard for traditional standards of conduct has pushed American politics into a process of moral deterioration. The boundaries of acceptable political behavior have been stretched far beyond yesterday's standards of decency. Apparently, nothing is shameful anymore. Two circumstances make this situation particularly dangerous. The first is Trump's advancing age and the concerns it raises about his behavior and judgment. The second is his political future, which, unlike life itself, has a clearly defined expiration date. November 3 brings the midterm elections. On January 3, a new Congress takes office, potentially determined to investigate the actions of this administration. In 2027, the next presidential campaign will begin taking shape. By 2028, America's attention will turn toward choosing its next leader. An America without Trump. Even Republican candidates are increasingly reluctant to associate themselves too closely with him. Imagine what their attitudes may become in 2027 and 2028. Trump's political comeback was undeniably historic. Before him, only Grover Cleveland had returned to the White House after losing reelection. Yet his second term may become a cruel psychological trap. The attention he desperately craves also exposes him to constant scrutiny. Every grandiose declaration invites another examination of his achievements, contradictions, and failures. His endless speeches about his own greatness are accompanied by recurring demonstrations of the gap between his self-image and reality. Trump possesses enormous power, wealth, and influence. Yet critics see an extraordinary emptiness behind the spectacle. What lies ahead may resemble what psychologists call narcissistic collapse: the shattering of a carefully constructed image of personal greatness. For someone whose identity depends on admiration, superiority, and unquestioned loyalty, the loss of political relevance could represent a devastating personal crisis. Perhaps Trump possesses sufficient psychological defenses to retreat into denial and preserve his illusions. After all, he still has MAGA — a devoted audience prepared to accept almost anything from him. The more outrageous his behavior, the more enthusiastically some supporters applaud. But the danger extends far beyond Trump himself. As his political time runs out, a president increasingly confronted with the limits of his power may respond with greater hostility toward those he considers ungrateful, disloyal, or responsible for his frustrations. And when that person commands the immense machinery of American power, the consequences of such a confrontation could reach far beyond the United States. The real danger is not merely the collapse of one man's carefully cultivated image. It is what he might do while desperately trying to prevent that collapse.
