Third graders in Steubenville, Ohio, are among the best little readers in the nation. For nearly 20 years, the elementary schools in this economically depressed area have produced better readers than some of the wealthiest places in the country.

If you want to be a compassionate teacher, then you must have and enforce rules.
Replying to @Doug_Lemov
We’ve created this false narrative that managing behavior is somehow at odds with being a compassionate educator. Actually, clear, consistent behavioral systems and expectations are a form of deep care.
I hope other districts will take note and move in this direction.

Principals, don’t overcomplicate it. Sometimes just remove the kid from class and give the teacher a break.

In my experience low academic expectations can be one of the most harmful edu practices. Kids in schools from disadvantaged situations are often assumed to be less capable. The expectations are set low and it creates a self fulfilling prophecy. Kids often work slightly below our expectations, so when the expectations are low and the students don’t succeed, the expectations are sometimes lowered even further. This creates a race to the bottom for struggling schools. If your students are struggling lift them up, don’t lower the net.

If the wider public knew what is happening they would be shocked. In many schools today, 1% of students are destroying the education of the rest and taking up the most of the time/energy of the staff. Unsustainable.

When posed with this question:
“Would you rather have a fun teacher that teaches you nothing or a strict teacher that teaches you well?” none of the students in my advisory picked the first one. The stories they told to back it up were WILD. “5th grade was hard for me because all my 4th grade teacher did was make us play Blooket and take us out for 3 recesses.” 👀
