How are housing and health inextricably linked?
An unhoused patient has health care costs 7x higher than housed individuals.
And people without housing typically live nearly 20 years less.
Housing is a matter of human dignity and sound economics.

Rest in Power & Peace, Peter. Last night, with family by his side, Peter Leslie ended his journey in this world. Peter played a significant role in Toronto’s harm reduction community - he will be deeply missed.
In the past 3 months I have not had a single TTC ride without issues or delays! For everyone who relies on TTC as their only form of transportation, this is a nightmare! Can’t even imagine what it’s like for visitors! We need to do better! @TTChelps @TTCnotices @cityoftoronto

Dear 2024,
I have reviewed your manuscript with interest and regret to advise that I will be declining representation.
While the plot is interesting, it strikes me that there is a little too much of it. I fear that readers will become overwhelmed. 1/
Another day in Toronto, another “no service, we apologize for the inconvenience” on @TTCnotices
I know shit happens but when delay free commute on public transportation is an EXCEPTION and not a rule, it’s obvious there is a huge problem 🙈 #TTC #torontoproblems #toronto

Great new study in @TheLancetPH, showing a significant decrease in fatal overdoses in the Toronto neighbourhoods surrounding supervised injection sites - a 67 per cent reduction in overdose deaths in neighbourhoods within 500 metres of the sites thelancet.com/journals/lanpu…

The Icelandic tradition of giving books as presents is #Jolabokaflod Then spend Christmas eve night reading and eating chocolate. In Iceland they publish more books than any other country and sell most of its books between September and November as they prepare. 📚🎄❤

I'm proud to work at @allsaintsTO, which is one of the last truly low-barrier spaces left for unhoused folks in TO. With just 15 staff, we have no core funding from @cityoftoronto or the Diocese, yet we serve 200+ meals, four days a week (it's stuffed peppers today, c/o Chef Me).

📢For anyone not into reading full threads here is the bottom line. The federal gov't offered the @cityoftoronto two armouries for a few weeks for refugee shelter and then $5m to operate a refugee shelter at the Better Living Centre. The city turned it down.

In 2022 we were warned the Ford government was not "For the People" but rather "For the Profit". Just a year and a half later, we see the true colors of the Ontario government. "Doug Ford’s government is quietly privatizing health care". March 15, 2022.

Absurdities of our health care system: started feeling sick over the weekend, tested + for COVID, never seen a test turn + so fast (in under 3 minutes). I qualify for paxlovid but in order to get it I have to SHOW UP IN PERSON TO MY GP’s OFFICE 👀 Wait? What?

For a very long time I was homeless. To everyone who:
was kind
gave me a jacket
gave me food
said hello
spared change
gave me a hug
didn't judge me for struggling
Even though you couldn't change my circumstances, what you provided me was a moment of humanity in those circumstances that helped me find the courage to break free and I try to pay that forward to others. Thank you! 🥹🙏🏼❤️ #grateful
A decade of work w/ folks experiencing #homelessness, poverty, marginalization in TO w/ a tired soul lately I’ve been all about delulu moments fantasizing of all levels of system (including city, province, feds) working together to actually help people! Imagine! #socialservices

Housing for all is a matter of human dignity and sound health economics.
1 month in hospital: ~$30,000
1 month in prison system: ~$14,000
1 month in shelter: ~$6,700
1 month in supportive housing: ~$3,500
There is no health without housing.
We have partnered with the City of Toronto and community to launch Social Medicine Housing — “prescribing” housing for people who need it most.

I guess this needs to be repeated for all the folks way in the back:🗣️ You cannot and will not solve homelessness by putting people into addiction treatment! However, you solve homelessness by building homes that people can afford to live in! Imagine that 🤯! #HousingCrisis

For everyone who says "harm reduction enables people to continue using drugs and doesn't actively connect people to detox and recovery". This is the overdose prevention site in the DTES with a HUGE sign that says "feeling done"? I don't know anyone in harm reduction who wouldn't connect someone to recovery treatment if they asked. Don't be fooled by the anti-harm reduction activists who continue to mislead, misinform and stigmatize harm reduction in order to push their own narrative. It is this stigma that drives people into isolation and we all know what happens when people use alone. It's not a competition we need both!
London (Ontario) harm reduction colleagues: please join us for a knowledge exchange event on August 18! We’ll be talking about how to effectively support people experiencing #homelessness and #mentalhealth and substance use challenges.
