One of my absolute favorite classes to teach: Porter on standardized time. So: before modern clocks, we often kept *diurnal time*. Like: there are 24 hours in the day. 6 AM = sunrise, 6 PM = sunset. This is a completely different way of keeping time. 🧵:

This whole thread is great, but this forest-from-a-roundabout really stuck with me. Everyone loves to talk about the strides Paris has made with cycling, but the massive investment in greening the city deserves equal credit for why these changes have been so popular.

“And that’s what makes this all so sickeningly dystopian: This was two marginalized Black men pitted against one another — with one killing the other — in a confrontation sparked by $14.64 worth of snacks from Walgreens.” missionlocal.org/2023/05/ban…

Kind of nuts seeing how well the AI does at producing code. Big societal question now is, how do we increase the number of students with liberal arts degrees in order to prepare for the jobs of tomorrow?

The transformation of people's lives when through-traffic is kept off the streets is astonishing. Low traffic neighbourhoods bring communities back to life. But the new barbarism is waging war on them. theguardian.com/commentisfre…

what we need is a Democratic Party that isn’t the Democratic Party like a party that believes the things Democrats purport to believe, but actually acts the way you’d expect someone to act if they believed those things

I have said it before and I will say it again: Under my watch, no person will ever be prosecuted for making decisions about their reproductive health. I will continue to fight to protect the rights of women and all people to control their bodies and choices. 1/

The fires burned for 3 days after the 1906 Earthquake. And perhaps no building better illustrates the progress of the fire, as well as the aftermath of the disaster, than 1896 Market Street (blue arrow). 1/10

“Present day urban development is ruined, most often, by the hierarchy of decisions in which the road network comes 1st, buildings come 2nd, and pedestrian space comes 3rd. The correct sequence is just the opposite; pedestrian space 1st, building 2nd, and roads 3rd.”—C. Alexander

shocking as it is, the Tenderloin is easy to understand. it's the result of a long litany of policy decisions, made by presidents as well as local neighborhood merchants organizations. it is the sum of our choices--choices we continue to make, while feigning shock at the outcome.
Mayor Breed's recently-announced emergency cleanup measures in the Tenderloin might seem unprecedented, but they follow a long line of similar efforts by local politicians dating back at least to the '90s. To some observers, it's a never-ending cycle. sfs.news/p9XTth

SF's Supervisors will vote on Mayor Breed's Declaration of a State of Emergency to address the ongoing crisis of overdose and homelessness in the Tenderloin, SF's "Skid Row." It's not sustainable or supported by research/expertise. It could cause immense harm. My concerns: 🧵 1/n

Something special is happening in Barcelona. It started last month when some parents organized a bike ride to school for just five kids. Now entire neighborhoods are joining. They call it Bicibús – or Bike Bus.

This is unbelievable and it is actually happening.
1. 🧵 Tomorrow, the @BORUSG is expected to vote to end tenure for Georgia's public universities. The AAUP has warned that this move will destroy protections for academic freedom, which is indispensable for the quality of teaching and research in higher education.

This is a world on fire. Most of these disasters haven't been reported at all. The rest, though they still rage, have already been forgotten.
