Standardized testing, especially in elementary level is not only a massive waste of time and money, but has little to no impact on student learning.
Homework does little to improve achievement and can actually have negative effects, especially at elementary level. Recess however has many positive effects such as improved self regulation of emotions, improved interpersonal skills and focus! And should never be taken away.
Some of the best classroom management techniques, especially for younger children, include frequent recesses and breaks!
No one should care how a kindergartener compares on a standardized test with kindergarteners around the country. They should care if the kindergartener feels cared for, valued, and actually enjoys coming to school to learn. Its Kindergarten!

Doing mathematics with just pencil and paper is historicallyβhence, pedagogicallyβimportant. Almost all of the deep insights into numbers and geometry occurred without calculators and technology. The art of math lies in the creativity of the brain.
Besides the many issues with standardized testing. Most students have no idea what they missed on the tests and teachers don't either. And typically by time they get results students have moved on to next grade. Yet, we spend billions and place such importance on them.

Stepping back, staying present & observing play centers joy & risk, but also trust & self-knowledge. Stepping back supports safe, loving, nurturing environments where childrenβs emotional needs can be met. There is no conflict between stepping back & emotional safety & growth.

We spend 50% more hours in school than Finland. And they get 15 mins of recess every hour. They have NO standardized tests except for PISA in HS and they outperform us every time. If we canβt give students more movement, recess, and play time then we donβt understand education.
