kinda crazy that the show/books where two pro athletes fall deeply in love and have to overcome the sensationalized rivalry prescribed to them has a fanbase that’s hell bent on pitting those two against each other, almost like in some sort of rivalry…

Full offense bc this is not that hard to understand. TLG is centered around the romance trope of “choosing your partner over your passion," and then turning the trope on its head by concluding that actually, you can have both. Shane and Ilya have inverted arcs to get there. +

yuna is a bad mom. ilya is probably a racist but we should still feel bad for him. troy calls shane racist slurs to his face. ilya is abusive. shane should stay closeted. like why are you even writing about these characters when you hate every single one of them i'm crying
perfectly said & honestly I think a lot of people who struggle to understand TLG are missing that this is the fundamental structure of the story.

Yeah once I realized that it all clicked
Heated Rivalry: Shane has to accept something about himself, Ilya has to leave something behind
The Long Game: Ilya has to accept something about himself, Shane has to leave something behind

The way I view it is this: in heated rivalry, the main pressures affecting Ilya are external and Shane’s are internal. In The Long Game, that’s flipped.

#heatedrivalry Because I don’t think Shane would care at all.

“Years do odd things to identity.” A poem by Ursula K. Le Guin.

ALT Leaves BY URSULA K. LE GUIN Years do odd things to identity. What does it mean to say I am that child in the photograph at Kishamish in 1935? Might as well say I am the shadow of a leaf of the acacia tree felled seventy years ago moving on the page the child reads. Might as well say I am the words she read or the words I wrote in other years, flicker of shade and sunlight as the wind moves through the leaves.
