So basically, today PHP got two critical bugs that let anyone run code on your server without even logging in, which is bad, and then the details leaked before the patch was even out, which is worse, and it works on WordPress and MediaWiki and Magento and Joomla and Laravel, and Censys says like 1.5 million servers are running a version with no fix, so the NSA was like "take your system offline," and the FBI was like "take your system offline," and CISA and the UK and CERT-EU were all like "take your system offline," and then the Prime Minister of Japan, the actual Prime Minister, posted at 5:55 in the morning telling 48.8 million people to take their system offline, so everyone took their system offline, like the Dutch cybersecurity agency took its own website offline, and the Dutch parliament went offline, and the Port of Rotterdam went offline, and Finland and France and Denmark started pulling government sites, and Wikipedia went down, and Archive.org went down, and Asana and GOG and Something Awful went down, and the University of Vienna's webmail went down for some reason, and that's just PHP. Because GitLab also dropped a CVSS 10.0, which is the highest score they give out, for a bug that's been there since 2014, so that's every self-hosted GitLab for twelve years, and then LiteLLM 1.107.0 got hijacked and shipped a credential stealer and a remote access trojan in every single wheel and the Docker images, including latest, and you didn't even have to import it, just installing it was enough, and it's the second time this year, and then Railway paused every deployment on the entire platform because someone got into the environment variables, so now everyone has to rotate every secret they've ever stored there, and TiDB Cloud said someone was walking around inside with stolen credentials for basically a month and an extortion group says they took 10.6 terabytes, and Zeabur got breached for the second time in two months and is just shutting down, like the whole company, and Node.js patched remote code execution and a TLS bypass, and CISA says Plex is being actively exploited, and someone took over 300 Tor exit relays to steal SSH passwords, and SafePay ransomware has hit over 600 critical infrastructure orgs, and India's biggest bank filed a data loss incident, and Japan has been in an official state of emergency in cyberspace since October 9, which honestly explains the 5:55 AM post. Oh, and eMudhra, a certificate authority that's issued over 60 million certificates, whose entire job is proving websites are who they say they are, was supposed to be using private keys that are random numbers over a hundred digits long, and one of them was 4. Just 4. And the others were like 66 and 237. Anyway, it's Wednesday.

My new show with @CaseyNewton is called Machine Gods, and we’re partnering with NPR!
It’s a twice-a-week, video-first podcast about AI, and it will be available next month on YouTube and other podcast apps (and on radio soon!)
It’s a really critical time for public engagement with AI, and we’re thrilled to bring our AI coverage (and jokes!) to NPR’s massive audience, while building an independent media company in San Francisco. We’re also thrilled that @RachelCohnnn, our incredible Hard Fork producer, is coming with us to make the new show.
More to say soon!

Just posted my second video on YouTube, this one is me going back and reading my diary from when I was making Signs.
I hope you like it, it was great for me to go back and read and remember what I was going through back in 2001.

Anti-Kosovar propaganda.
Benchmark charts where Anthropic's models come out ahead are the only ones I trust.
Next thing Claude is going to use Greek Characters, making even searching difficult 😂😂

GPT-5.5 delivers this step up in intelligence without compromising on speed.
GPT-5.5 matches GPT-5.4 per-token latency in real-world serving, while performing better across nearly every evaluation we measured.
It also uses significantly fewer tokens to complete the same Codex tasks, making it more efficient as well as more capable.

New blog: Building agents that reach production systems with MCP.
When should agents use direct APIs vs CLIs vs MCP? Plus patterns for building MCP servers, context-efficient clients and pairing MCP with skills.

100% this and everyone knows it.
It's the same reason why all the epstein files target Bill Gates. He doesn't give dictator-style praise to Trump.

Agree with him or not, the (oddly popular on here!) take that Dario Amodei is some kind of bumbling Silicon Valley naïf who couldn't get a deal with the Pentagon done because he doesn't understand politics seems entirely wrong.
His favorite book is "The Making of the Atomic Bomb." He used to buy copies for new Anthropic employees. (There's still a copy prominently displayed in the Anthropic library.) He fully expected -- back when it was a crazy thing to expect! -- that AI would become as important as nuclear weapons, and that the people who built it, like the scientists of the Manhattan Project, would face pressure from governments to use their technology in ways they found immoral or dangerous.
I am sure this all could have been handled differently, but none of this is a surprise to anyone who knows anything about the relevant people.
This is the classic Trump Administration: cycle through lies until one catches with their folks (only the stupid ones, but just like @chamath there are enough of them)
What a despicable lying POS.
It’s a shame that @DarioAmodei is a liar and has a God-complex. He wants nothing more than to try to personally control the US Military and is ok putting our nation’s safety at risk.
The @DeptofWar will ALWAYS adhere to the law but not bend to whims of any one for-profit tech company.
Readers added context they thought people might want to know
"Anthropic's contract with the Pentagon includes usage-policy restrictions—contractual guardrails that prohibit applications such as autonomous weapons and mass surveillance. The Pentagon originally agreed to these terms."

This is out of control.
Pete Hegseth wants to use AI to fire weapons without human input. And he's willing to blackmail a private company in order to do it.
He is a threat to our safety and must be fired immediately.
