Experts say there is a direct link between majoritarian politics, hypernationalism, and a general decline in institutional trust — especially the judiciary — leading to increased instances of attacks against the judges. asiandispatch.net/the-bench-…

INTERESTING: In Serbia, student-led protests have ended Aleksandar Vučić’s 12-year grip on power. In Brazil, Lula defeated the odds and Bolsonaro despite Trump backing his rival. For those drawing parallels with India, a note of caution: political change is never a copy-paste exercise. India has its own institutions, electorate, political culture and social realities. What happens elsewhere cannot be mechanically replicated here. But one truism of life and politics endures beyond national boundaries : Arrogance invites a reckoning ; humility is the wiser course. Never take the people—or their mandate—for granted in a democracy.🙏

Legal experts have called the detentions of protestors & others “illegal” and have questioned Delhi Police’s refusal to allow anti-CEC protests. They also said “reasonable apprehension” to avoid violence can’t be used as a reason to stop demonstrations. asiandispatch.net/were-the-d…

Petition filed in Supreme Court over the alleged detention, dragging and manhandling of journalists, including women reporters, while covering protests demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. The petition, filed by Network of Women in Media, India, says the alleged police action continued despite the Supreme Court’s direction that journalists should not be hindered in discharging their duties. It seeks binding safeguards and an independent inquiry.

Journalists are required, by the very nature of their profession, to report from protests, public assemblies, & other situations involving the exercise of State power. Any interference impacts news gathering & #FreePress, @NWM_India said in a plea filed before #SupremeCourt.

This photo by Raju Shinde of @HTMumbai is heartbreaking, angering and iconic. I don’t know if on the next day, HT carried it as the lead image on Pg One but if I were there, this one was a no brainier. #photojournalism #CJPprotest #Mumbaiprotest #HindustanTimes

At least 16 journalists were brutally detained while covering public demonstrations in #India. In addition to the four journalists already mentioned, RSF has learned that Anushka Bhardwaj (#BusinessStandard), Hritik Joshi and Rahul Charas (@NavbharatTimes), Shoaib Daniyal (#Scroll), Anshu (@newslaundry ), Saurabh Sharma (@Reuters ), Jagriti Trisha (BOOM), Shivang Shukla (Mo), Neeraj Jha (@moliticsindia), and freelance journalist Paranjoy Guha Thakurta were also forcibly detained in #Delhi, along with Kinjal (@AltNews) in #Ahmedabad and Divya Aslesha (Scroll) in #Pune. Covering events of public interest is not a crime. It is their job. The police's actions against the press are unacceptable.

Here is what we need right now: ALL EYES ON PANDWALA KHURD COMMUNITY CENTRE. A hostile crowd is now forming outside the centre. Cops are feral. Everyone is on high alert. We need to ensure the detainees make it out ALIVE, if not unscathed. REPOST AND CIRCULATE THIS NOW.

A day after the city-wide restrictions on internet & travel services, #SupremeCourt asked @DelhiPolice to justify why contempt proceedings should not be initiated & said lawyers, journalists & other professionals should not be prevented from discharging their professional duties.
