Scientists have identified a gene variant associated with human growth hormone that likely made Neanderthals stockier and burlier than modern humans.
What’s more, some people today have inherited that variant from a long-ago mixing between the two groups—and they tend to carry more lean muscle mass than those with the standard version of the gene.
