Well said Ameer
As I said on @bbcsml we should not be paying a penny in slavery reparations to anyone. Yes slavery was wrong, but it was practiced by societies the world over (and indeed continued to be practiced by Africans and others long after Britain abolished it). Given the huge amounts of blood and treasure we spent in abolishing the slave trade around the world, we have also amply paid our debt

For those who don’t know, the wonderful Alan McFarlane was born in Assam, wrote (with his mother) the book Empire of Tea, and helped me write Among the Headhunters. He was, and remains, an extraordinary anthropologist and supporter of @KohimaEdTrust Millions of young Chinese are turning to an unlikely source for advice on work, family and how to live: an 84-year-old Cambridge professor with a lo-fi Xiaohongshu account. bloomberg.com/news/features/…

The Great Debt India Owes to Australia – and the role of Subedar Chint Singh 2/12 Frontier Force When WWII ended, the Australians liberated 6,500 Indian POWs in Papua New Guinea – the skeletal survivors of 17,000 men sent there. This is the story of how Australia sought justice for the survivors and the role of Subedar Chint Singh. #IndianArmy #WW2 #WWII @PenguinIndia @penswordbooks

“A relatively minor 21st century conflict made me change my mind about my life’s work.” Erm, ok….
Michael Walzer published “Just and Unjust Wars,” an attempt to delineate the rights and wrongs of warfare in both its causes and its conduct, in 1977. In the nearly 50 years since, no other book on the subject has matched its influence. The precepts are not complicated: it is just to defend your country from an invasion and it is unjust to invade a country that has not attacked you—although Walzer does allow for exceptions, mostly for humanitarian causes. It is just to assume certain risks to avoid civilian casualties and it is unjust to bomb towns indiscriminately to compel an enemy to surrender. The justice of going to war—what philosophers call jus ad bellum—is separate from jus in bello, the justice of how a war is fought. The war in Gaza has made Walzer rethink one of the book’s fundamental principles. “The wall between jus ad bellum and jus in bello, which had sustained his theory for almost half a century, was no longer sturdy,” Jordi Graupera writes. As Walzer said to him, “There is a sense in which the carnage of Gaza, the ongoing carnage, simply made the war unjust.” Read about why a philosopher of war is now reconsidering his seminal work: newyorkermag.visitlink.me/T7…

The silence is deafening. Where are the marches?
🚨This is Afghanistan if the world remains silent. A dark place where women lose all basic human rights the right to education, freedom, even control over childbirth. Forced marriage. The sale of girls at a young age. and women will be just as sexual slavery. and men are allowed to have multiple wives. This is a warning to the world: If this situation becomes normalized in Afghanistan, it can reach your country tomorrow. Silence does not stop oppression it spreads it.💔

Great car too!
Clocks back, autumn in the air and glorious sunshine in London. And a reminder that Islington isn’t all lefties and liberal intelligentsia. There are still a few British classics lurking in Islington. Nearly 90 years old, proudly British and, naturally, right-hand drive. #SSJaguar100

Ras Pagani was the only man to escape from the Death Railway. His is an extraordinary story, told brilliantly by Philip Davies amzn.eu/d/04Hd0uZn
The British POWs of Imperial Japan in WWII have sadly sometimes been under-recognised. In recent years, family members and historians have sought to restore these brave people - who suffered so much - to their proper place in history. Roy's story here is important.🙏

Yes, @wesstreeting, we do need to rethink to gain the initiative. But you won’t do that by working the old machine harder. You need a new one… Some quotes in the following short thread from a @Policy_Exchange research paper drafted a year ago. 1/3 telegraph.co.uk/news/2026/10…

Am I the only one who wants to shout at the government to get its own house in order before it starts telling us to prepare for war? This is astounding arrogance, and incompetence. The PM told us only weeks back that welfare trumped defence, and the Chancellor has already rowed back on the commitments he made when Secretary of State for Defence. So why then tell us to do what the government itself is not prepared to do? We are truly governed by imbeciles. digitaleditions.telegraph.co…

If that’s the case, why aren’t you hitting defence spending targets? You tell us to be ready for war, @wesstreeting, yet you are cutting funding for basic military exercise so our military aren’t even ready. Find it properly and people might take you seriously. @Telegraph telegraph.co.uk/news/2026/10…

Katie couldn’t be more right. Decline is a choice - and we need the political leadership from MPs to champion why building this stuff is vital to sustain and enhance our national quality of life.

Just admit that you’ve written a silly, vacuous and dreary essay, that makes no sense and has zero moral content.
3/3 .@robvert_lyman, given all this (preference for generals over elected govt and free press, crude use of secret police methods against dissent), aren't you a bit confused about your cause?
