Day I toured LU I sat behind Sister Jean at mass. She turned around to talk to my parents and I about how great LU would be for me. Then she said to go to the opener that night bc the team was going to be extra special. This was Fall 17. Great person and all-time ball knower. RIP
At 101 here, the best spot I’ve seen anyone predict Loyola.
I’ve seen our range of predictions run from 100-200+, to show how much of a wildcard this team is
College basketball is here, so it’s time to unveil my annual 1-365 rankings of every team in the sport.
Never been a harder year to do it with so much roster uncertainty, but use this as your guide to the season ahead!
Rankings, stats, notes here: ⬇️⬇️

Current starter projection, assuming Dawson has the green light on 11/2:
PG: Grotzinger
SG: Dawson
F: Nessah
F: Rapieque
C: Schofield/Diallo (the next exhibition/Diallo’s status may decide this)
Game notes
FT: C (a lot of points left at the line, I believe they shot ~60%)
3P%: C (somewhere in the low 20% clip. Just not many guys who you can expect to nail it on this squad)
Inside offense: B (a lot more of a presence this year. Nice cuts/plays, some execution lacking)
C: Amos (he is close/some good plays, just had too many missed gimmes), Anderson (nothing stood out), Kreager (nothing stood out), Agarwal (rough shooting in 1H, looked more effective in 2H), Jeffrey (had some questionable offensive plays, a lot of work to do on that end)
Game goes final. DePaul’s main 7-8 available guys played nearly the entire game with minimal substitutions. LU subbed seemingly every 30-60 secs and guys I don’t expect to see much this year got major minutes. LU only lost by 7. Idk… there’s a hopeful take from this result
This is the most inside presence Loyola has had in a while. I think it’s clear this team’s strength will not be 3 point shooting. And they’ll need to strategize accordingly
LU keeps cutting the lead down + DEP turnovers galore as mixing & matching continues. As it stands, while both have things to tweak, I think this game is a lot more concerning from a DePaul POV given how this game is being treated by both sides. Very surprised LUC is back in it
Halftime, Loyola trails 40-30. Thoughts:
- Schofield is, surprisingly, the most impressive big
- Grotzinger can hoop. Went coast to coast and dunked it at warp speed
- A LOT of missed layups by Loyola
- They are subbing so much it’s actually kind of hard to get a read on much
- most have had their iffy moments in this one so far, but Hand and Diallo really have been the underwhelming guys so far
- Outside of one DePaul guy (Popoola) who’s draining an absurd amount of 3s, there is not much going on with their offense. Will be intriguing to see them 2H
Grotzinger is very fast and skilled. In the limited look of this squad so far, to me he is the clear best player on the team
This is Exhibit A why I hate this exhibition system. DePaul’s guys are in rhythm while we’re on our 8th set of guys. I would be surprised if Loyola is close in this one, not necessarily because of play but bc they’re just treating the game differently
Early notes from Gentile:
- DePaul is treating this more like a real game. No subs before the first TO. (Tbh don’t entirely know who DePaul’s projected starters are, but I’d assume it’s these guys)
- Loyola is mixing and matching. Starting lineup even had Anderson
- No Dawson
