Historian of fascism here. This is an escalation of an attempt to normalize extreme violence, ritualize violence, militarize the country, and make violence entertaining so when they ask you to commit violence in their name, you will be ready.
Trump & Hegseth aren't just proposing to livestream an execution for people who want to watch.
They're proposing to broadcast a man being shot to death, even if deserved by our system, and even if you agree with this version of the death penalty, knowing that the footage will be clipped, shared, and pushed into social media feeds.
Including those of our children. The gruesome image will be everywhere.
Parents will have virtually no control over whether their kids see it. Once those images are released, there is no taking them back.
Hope all the parents in the Trump Admin are cool with that.

Since both political parties and the donor class decided today is Paramount Oligarch Day, it seems like a good moment to post this before it is erased from the world by the media overlords.
This scene was supposed to be a cautionary tale. It became America's dominant ideology.

The profits have gone mostly to shareholders, who got nearly $40 billion in dividends over the past decade while customers suffer and workers are underpaid.

For decades, one tiny figure in the North Tower has remained impossible to forget....
A woman standing high above New York, waving. She is widely believed to have been Edna Cintron, a 46-year-old administrative assistant who worked on the 97th floor of the World Trade Center's North Tower.
At 8:46 a.m. on September 11, 2001, Flight 11 struck floors 93 through 99. Edna's office was directly within that area. Yet afterward, photographs and video captured a woman standing at the edge of the enormous opening left in the tower.
She was alive.
And she was waving toward the city below.
From hundreds of feet away, people could see her small figure moving against the massive building. There was no way for those watching from the ground to reach her. But she continued to be visible as the morning unfolded.
The woman became known simply as “The Waving Woman.” Because the footage is distant, her identity has never been established with absolute certainty. But she has long been widely identified as Edna Cintron, whose husband William was desperately searching for information about her that day.
Edna had gone to work that morning like thousands of other New Yorkers. She lived in Queens, worked for Marsh & McLennan and shared a life with her husband that included running flower shops and traveling together.
Nothing about the morning was supposed to be extraordinary.
Then one distant image made her recognizable to people who had never met her.
At 10:28 a.m., the North Tower came down.
Edna did not return home.
Her name can now be found on the 9/11 Memorial in New York, alongside thousands of others remembered there. But for many people, she is also remembered through that distant figure at the window.
Not as a number.
As one person still making herself seen.

This Atlantic article on Taiwan has prompted harsh criticism, mostly deserved. It is riddled with problems, some of which I'll dive into. But it also asks provocative questions that I think are worth exploring in a more rigorous manner. theatlantic.com/magazine/202… /1

Dear @TheAtlantic @shustry
If I wanted to teach a class about why people dislike foreign journalists, I’d show them your piece on Taiwan. It pays no attention to our rich, complex, multilayered, local struggles. Not one ordinary person or family is portrayed. 1/
