Taylor Swift says a radio DJ grabbed her under her skirt. He sued her for $3 million. She sued him back for exactly $1. In the video below, from her Netflix documentary, she says: "He got fired. Then he sued me for millions of dollars. So I countersued for one dollar." June 2, 2013, Denver. Before her concert, Swift posed for a meet-and-greet photo with local radio host David Mueller. She says it happened while the photo was being taken. Her team told his station. Days later, he was fired. In 2015 he sued her and her mother, saying he never touched her under her skirt and the accusation cost him a job paying about $150,000 a year. Swift countersued for assault and battery. She asked for $1 and said any money would go to charities that protect women from sexual assault. Then came the trial. August 2017. Mueller testified his hand touched what "seemed to be her ribs." Asked if Mueller got what he deserved, Swift said: "I'm being blamed for the unfortunate events of his life that are a product of his decisions, not mine." On August 12 the judge threw out his $3 million claim against her. Two days later, a jury of six women and two men found he had assaulted her and ordered him to pay her $1. The case for Mueller: he denied it under oath and lost his job over her word. The case for Swift: she says seven people saw it and there was a photo. In 2020 she said she had "the ability to pay for a brilliant lawyer," and without that, "I don't know what would have happened." If winning a case like this takes a brilliant lawyer, is a $1 verdict justice, or a luxury most women can't afford?
