At this point in the labor market recovery, it’s becoming even more apparent that if there isn’t enough reliable childcare, that could have huge effects on the economic recovery and on women in particular. A 🧵: 1/n

On Thursday, @BEA_News will release its preliminary estimate for third-quarter economic growth. Given the timing, it's going to get a ton of attention. It also has the potential to be VERY misleading. So! Time for a thread on the numbers and how the Times will be covering them:

100% this. In *normal* times, fiscal rules can be important & useful mechanisms to filter out policy options that aren't fiscally realistic or feasible. We are not in normal times. [short thread follows with GOT memes].

Be careful not to confuse percent with percentage point. A change from 10% to 13% is a rise of 3 percentage points. This is not equal to a 3% change; rather, it’s a 30% increase.

#Novel coronavirus- a cautionary tale: the thread   Heavens to Dickens, look at that data! You may have noticed a bit of Twist, Oliver. As we opened a new chapter into stage 3 with hope, the COVID case counts have been fast and furious the past few days. (1/5)

*NEWS* @StatCan_eng has discontinued collection of Job Vacancy and Wage Survey, just when it's needed most. Disappointing. Expect to see increasing vacuous demand-vs-supply debates about cause of sluggish/incomplete employment recovery in months ahead. Mark my word. #cdnecon
This new working paper says "to paint a more complete picture of how the economy is performing, it is imperative also to have timely and accurate [job] vacancy data." clef.uwaterloo.ca/wp-content…

The government estimates the wells and methane initiatives will maintain about 10,000 jobs across the country. The prime minister says Ottawa is also working with BDC and EDC to expand credit support for medium-sized at-risk energy companies.
