In India a MP spends about 20 cr for election. At PPP terms that works out to about 10 mn usd. For 543 MPs that works out to 5 bn USD. At market exchange rates that works out to 1.2-1.3 bn USD. For context the major party candidates put together spent 3.5 bn in 2024.. On PPP terms, indian elections have a far greater influence of big and dirty money than American elections. Good is often the enemy of the perfect. Our system only has a top soil of democracy. Our democracy works perfectly at the intersection of criminality, corruption and venality. If better people need to come through we need inner party democracy.
Nithya Raman (as repuslvie as she is) is about to become the mayor of LA. Her family migrated about 40 years ago and she is a first generation politician who could contest and win the election for one of the top cities of the US. In India it is near impossible because we lack a) inner party democracy b) transparent primary system that gives a fair opportunity to the people to have who they believe is the right candidate to represent them in a general election. Power is impossible to get in India. And once you get it, it is impossible to get rid of the ones in power. If we are serious about our politics, we should have a law that will impose a primary system for every post within parties, every election should have the equivalent of an internal primary system for every party with a VS >> 5%. The EC should oversee it. This will expand the EC’s role greatly but that is better than the current once in five year ritual of finding a 108 year old man living on a boat with Parkinsons in crocodile infested waters and flying him out to vote. The only way our democracy becomes participative is inner party democracy. I believe @annamalai_k has these ideas. Would be good if they do this for WTL’s internal candidate selections as well.

Raghunath ji, thank you for bringing this to our attention. It is at the heart of what we are attempting at @SarvamAI .
We agree that you shouldn't have to count characters to be empowered by AI. We have credited your account with a lifetime access to our models. 🙏
Anyone else using Sarvam for accessibility, please write to us at [email protected]. Our team will address you directly while we work towards launching a formal program asap.
Hello @SarvamAI,
I am 70, an oral cancer survivor since 2015. Cancer took away my God-given gift of speech. Today, my wife is my voice before doctors, banks and the outside world.
I have spent years communicating through written notes, often unread or unanswered. At cancer hospitals, I see countless patients struggling to express their suffering. Our pain is ours, but our voice has become someone else’s.
India has an estimated 1.99 million people with speech disabilities. For us, Text-to-Speech AI is not a convenience. It is our lost voice restored.
A doctor may not read my 100-word note, but could listen to it in under a minute.
Yet your per-character pricing makes regular use expensive.
Could @SarvamAI introduce an affordable, unlimited-use Divyangjan monthly subscription like other AI models like #ChatGPT #GeminiAI?
We are not asking for charity. We are asking for the dignity of speaking for ourselves.
Waiting for your reply so that I can subscribe this tool right away.

This has to change. 90 days notice is just a torture for all parties involved. TBH, 15 days is enough.

A good friend who works at a global hedge fund told me his colleagues say
"If India's sovereign bond is giving me 5.5% in USD, and Google is giving me 5.6%, why invest in India?"
Was interesting to see Google as an India replacement, a company equivalent to a sovereign country

Saw a Venus Water Heater advertisement in the TOI featuring an actress as its brand ambassador. It got me thinking.
Venus is a company that was started in Tuticorin nearly 60 years ago. It was among the pioneers in manufacturing geysers and water heaters in India.
Imagine if companies like Venus had never existed. We would probably be importing water heaters from China as well!
There are countless such companies in India. They don't receive the recognition and celebration they deserve. Yet, over several decades, they have made an enormous contribution to building India's indigenous manufacturing capabilities.
We need thousands, if not millions, of such companies across India.
Our entrepreneurs have demonstrated time and again that they are capable of building successful businesses despite the constraints imposed by the system.
Imagine what they could achieve if the system itself became an enabler rather than an obstacle!
India's entrepreneurial success stories have largely been written despite the system. Just imagine the scale of success we could unlock if the system stopped being obstructive and started being supportive.
That is the multiplier India needs!

On one hand this is a number…a statistic of India’s rise in the Asian Para Games.
But, importantly, this meteoric rise suggests something else…the immense potential and talent of our athletes.
This year we had:
30 Gold Medals + 5 World Records + 9 Asian Records + 4 events where Indians swept the entire podium!
Two of my favourite data points:
Of the 61 athletes making their Asian Para Games debut, 36 came back home with medals.
There are 34 medal winners among 56 women athletes!
Our athletes have shown that no dream is too big and no challenge too great when there is determination.
Those days are long over when society frowned upon youngsters who wanted to pursue sports.
Now, if you have the talent, India will support you and cheer for you.
Come, play and shine!

I am on my 1200th km here, and I haven’t spotted a single pothole so far. How is this even humanly possible man? That too in a country where the monsoon rains are at their peak. What quality are they using? I shouldn’t have come here. More than enjoyment it is saddening me. Wtf.

If India’s Metro network had continued expanding at the pace it did before 2014, how long would the wait be for cities like Pune to have a metro?
YEARS….no…DECADES perhaps.
And that was UNACCEPTABLE.
In 2014, India had just 248 km of Metro lines across 5 cities.
Today, we have nearly 1,200 km across 26 cities.
Over 1 crore people travel by Metro every day.
The impact goes beyond statistics or numbers.
It means less time in traffic, more family time, greater productivity and better opportunities.
This is the transformation we are working towards for urban India!

Store More → Import Less → Power India Round the Clock!
The Cabinet has approved a massive Rs 14,500 crore push to develop 92 GWh of energy storage capacity, supporting an estimate of almost 1 lakh crore investment!
Unique features are:
60 GWh of pumped hydro storage.
30 GWh of battery energy storage.
2 GWh through emerging technologies.
40% minimum domestic content for battery storage projects.
Truly, it is more reliable power, greater renewable energy integration and stronger energy security.

Do you feel India should depend on other countries for processing the critical minerals that power our future?
I certainly don’t!
Lithium, nickel, cobalt…these are essential for EVs, batteries, electronics and defence. Yet, we remain heavily dependent on imports of refined materials.
To address this, the Cabinet has approved a scheme to change this.
Key highlights:
New critical mineral processing plants.
Capital subsidy to boost investment.
Greater domestic value addition.
Stronger supply chains.
The principle is clear...India must have capabilities to build technologies of the future!

If Durai Murugan’s family can freely choose vedic rituals & DMK respects that personal choice, then every Tamil deserves the same freedom. Why ridicule ordinary people’s belief systems?
These double standards are exactly why the ideology faces humiliation today.
The very essence of Dravidian ideology is self respect, individual freedom and the right to choose.!
If Thiru Durai Murugan were to impose his ideological beliefs on his family, disregarding their personal wishes, wouldn’t that be patriarchy…? something the Dravidian movement has consistently opposed…?
Dravidianism should empower individuals to make their own choices, not dictate what those choices must be! 🎯

Just imagine what would have happened if there had been no hidden cameras installed inside Mahant Kashmir Giri's room. The truth might never have come out, and he could have been framed in a false drug case in Punjab.
The CCTV footage exposed how an ASI Sukhdev Singh planted heroin inside the house, which was subsequently shown as a recovery during a Punjab police raid.
Think about the gravity of this incident. It raises serious questions about the misuse of police authority and the abuse of power.
If those hidden cameras had not captured the incident, who would have believed Mahant Kashmir Giri? How many people could face similar injustice without ever getting an opportunity to prove their innocence?
