⚠️“DOMINANT”… a new variant is worrying epidemiologists—called #B11529–it has just “becoming dominant” in South Africa, displacing even #DeltaVariant (HT @MoshabelaMosa). And our other variant #C12 also growing. B11529 has an “awful spike profile” says @PeacockFlu. 🧵 #COVID19

This new variant, B.1.1.529 seems to spread very quick! In less than 2 weeks now dominates all infections following a devastating Delta wave in South Africa (Blue new variant, now at 75% of last genomes and soon to reach 100%)

Breaking News: The WHO approved the first ever malaria vaccine, which could save tens of thousands of children in sub-Saharan Africa. The quest for this vaccine has been underway for a hundred years, a WHO official said, and is a "historic event." nyti.ms/3oxUgAy
Readers added context they thought people might want to know
Minor correction but the WHO didn’t “approve” the vaccine — they “recommend” it. The WHO doesn’t have authority to approve vaccines. who.int/news/item/06-1… Phase 3 results of this vaccine were first published and the vaccine was approved by EMA in 2015.

🦠NEW VARIANT—a new #SARSCoV2 variant C.1.2 just identified in South Africa & several countries, with concerns it could be more infectious and evade vaccines. #C12 also has mutation rate that is nearly **twice as fast** as the rate of the other variants.🧵 jpost.com/health-science/new…

Notable, immunosenescence and 2 doses
Following on from the first dose Pfizer data below where 7/15 participants above the age of 80 did not achieve neutralisation of virus, we report that all 15 have achieved neutralisation 3 weeks after second dose.

Cats and #COVID19. They can transmit the virus to each other, as seen in this study - and in tigers in Bronx zoo. How efficiently can they transmit the virus to humans? Unclear. Ugh...we need a vaccine pronto. bit.ly/2YZ2zZd

Today both France and Spain (two badly hit countries) have come out with seroprevalence numbers. (France is a model, paper linked below. Spain was representative sample/survey of 60K; I don't have the paper yet). Both are ~5 percent. If that holds up, that is very very bad news.

Feng Zheng @MIT is a national treasure. His lab’s new CRISPR-based rapid #coronavirus test could be done at home for $45. (In the middle of this he also found time to graduate my PhD student @YuanchengLu 🙏)
A test that uses a CRISPR gene-editing system can detect the new coronavirus in an hour, without the need for specialized equipment or trained personnel. See the latest #COVID19 research news here. go.nature.com/2QZlT3T
