I honestly hate when people say that being depressed or having suicidal thoughts is simply a lack of iman. That is a very foolish and stupid thing to say. Depression is not something to joke about. Mental suffering is real. A person can love Allah and still be struggling. A person can pray and still cry. A person can have tawakkul and still feel exhausted. A person can have iman and still need help. We should stop judging people’s iman based on a battle we have never experienced. Sometimes the most Islamic thing you can do for someone is not give them another lecture. Don’t tell a depressed person, “Your iman is weak.” You don’t know their battle. You don’t know how many nights they cried after everyone went to sleep. You don’t know how many times they made dua. You don’t know how many times they tried to pray while their heart felt completely empty. You don’t know how exhausted their mind has become. And don’t ever tell someone, “Nothing could ever make you suicidal.” You are not Allah, and you don’t know what trial you or another person may face tomorrow.
