By the time 15-yr-old Jázmin Pellegrini was found dead in an SF driveway last April, Chronicle reporters Cynthia Dizikes and Joaquin Palomino had spent months investigating for-profit psychiatric hospitals.
They soon found her story epitomized the crisis inside these facilities.

Spoke to a local veterinarian receptionist who recalled Miranda’s Rescue brining in so many animals she was told to change the form from “euthanasia” to “sleep.” Eventually, she said, the vet curbed how many dogs Miranda could bring in.

Must be mentioned that the Mayor and his administration were pushed to act here by the dogged investigative work in recent months of @susieneilson @mitchell_m22494 @mgafni and @mdbarba of the Chronicle and @UCBerkeleyIRP as well as @Aisha_Mccain
When I took office, we set out to completely transform the city’s work around homelessness, drugs, and behavioral health—bringing urgency and accountability to every part of the system.
San Franciscans should have confidence that public dollars are producing real results. So when a provider isn’t keeping residents safe or providing effective services, we need to make a change. Due to HomeRise's continued failures, the city is taking steps to transition four programs to new providers who can deliver.
When an organization gets taxpayer dollars to deliver services for San Franciscans, our administration is going to hold them accountable.
Thank you to Department of Homelessness and Supportive Housing Executive Director Mike Levine and his team for leading this work with compassion and accountability for every resident in San Francisco.

Listening in on the call was a police detective.
