Alcohol should not be the priority when preparing an emergency box of supplies, Prime Minister Andy Burnham has advised the public.
Under a new Government “be ready” campaign, households are being urged to be prepared in case everyday services are temporarily disrupted, with three days of key supplies set aside.
Housing Secretary Angela Rayner previously joked that a bottle of sauvignon blanc and mascara would be part of her kit.
Asked if wine would also be part of his emergency box, Mr Burnham said: “I’m not sure that that’s the top of the list in terms of the advice that we’re giving to the to the public.
“You need to have a clear head when it comes to a challenging situation.
“So yeah, some tins of food, some bottled water. But I’m sure people are allowed a glass or two as well to get them through a difficult situation,” he added.

#France has reported the first documented case of a human infection with #Shamonda virus, a virus only previously detected in animals.
The patient was immunocompromised, which made them more vulnerable to infection and severe disease, and unfortunately died. My heartfelt condolences to their loved ones.
Shamonda virus primarily affects animals such as cattle, sheep, goats and horses. The virus is thought to spread between animals by the bites of a midge, which is a small fly-like insect. Further studies are needed to fully understand transmission.
The French patient was in an area where the Shamonda virus was circulating in animals and where Culicoides midges were also present.
@WHO is in contact with French authorities who are collecting information to better understand the source of infection in the first human patient, possible routes of transmission and any potential risk to public health.

HRCP is alarmed by a disturbing pattern in which the state’s failure to protect vulnerable people is compounded by the erosion of due process. The alleged killing of 15-year-old Waseem Abbas, who was reportedly chased and run over by his employer in Multan, and the subsequent death of the accused in an alleged police encounter, raises urgent questions about the state’s approach to treating human life and legal safeguards as expendable.
Not only do extrajudicial killings violate the right to due process, but they also deprive victims and their families of the chance to obtain truth and justice. The perception that such killings are an acceptable way of controlling crime signals that vengeance without accountability is prioritised over justice. We call for an independent, transparent investigation into this case and for an end to extrajudicial killings in all forms.

OPEN LETTER: Sally Rooney is a writer, not a terrorist. Her books must be available to the public. Their withdrawal from sale, on the basis of ill-conceived and draconian anti terror legislation, is an affront to basic principles of free speech and expression so long taken for granted in this country. Qatar Russia and Pakistan trying to mediate between US and Iran. A source close to Iran's chief negotiator Ghalibaf says reports about an imminent US-Iran deal are incorrect. Iran has now assumed a state of war as certainty and has prepared for it, the source adds.
Qalibaf to Pakistan's Asim Munir: "We have no new message". Adds US cannot gain Iran's trust except by implementing its 7 preconditions. Iran will only negotiate on nuclear once preconditions met.
So assumption grows once Israelis and Americans have voted, their leaders will bomb. Preoccupied with Ukraine, Europe is silent.

Extensive clashes have erupted between Pakistan and Afghanistan on the Ghuzgarhi border, Kurram district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa corresponding to Dande Patan district of Paktia province. There have been fatalities and injuries from both sides. A missile just crashed into a civilian area on the Pakistani side of Pewar.
