We celebrate today, women and girls living in rural communities:#InternationalRuralWomenDay Women living in rural communities are at the heart of our food systems and environmental sustainability. Through their knowledge, labour, and stewardship of the land, they nourish communities, preserve biodiversity, and contribute to the resilience of our planet. Yet, we must recognise an important distinction: it is not women who are rural, but the environments in which they live and work. Living and working in rural communities does not equate to a lack of knowledge, skills, or expertise. Women living in rural communities, including Indigenous women, hold valuable knowledge rooted in lived experience, traditional farming practices, and generations of environmental stewardship. Too often, these contributions remain underrecognised within formal knowledge systems and development processes. At the same time, many continue to face structural barriers, including limited access to quality healthcare, education, clean water, roads, digital connectivity, land, and financial resources. As we commemorate this day, we must move beyond celebrating the resilience of women and girls living in rural communities to addressing the inequalities that constrain their opportunities. Investing in women farmers living in rural communities is an investment in sustainable agriculture, food security, climate resilience, and the well-being of future generations. Their knowledge must be valued, their rights protected, and their leadership meaningfully reflected in the policies and decisions that shape our shared future. Caring for Mother Nature begins with recognising, supporting, and investing in the women who nurture her. #WomenAndGirls #RuralCommunities #GenderEquality #ClimateAction #SustainableDevelopment
