Performing random acts of kindness seven days in a row increases happiness for at least a month. A 2018 meta-analysis in the Journal of Social Psychology found that deliberately being kind to others produced a reliable boost in wellbeing across 21 studies and multiple cultures. Oliver Scott Curry at Oxford found the effect worked whether the kindness was large or small, directed at a friend or a stranger, and whether it cost money or was free. A compliment, a held door, a paid coffee, a handwritten note. The size of the act did not predict the size of the boost. The act itself was the dose. The mechanism runs through the brain's reward circuitry. Giving activates the same region that responds to receiving, and in some studies the activation is stronger for giving. The brain treats generosity as a personal reward, and the person feels it as warmth, satisfaction, and a sense of meaning. The meta-analysis found that the effect was strongest when the person chose to be kind freely, without being asked or obligated. Mandated kindness did not produce the same response. The brain needs the choice. The choice is where the meaning lives, and the meaning is where the happiness lives. You do not need a plan, a budget, or a reason. A message to someone who is struggling. A sentence of genuine praise. A small act with no audience. The research from four continents says the return arrives the same day, and the investment was never about the other person. It was about what happens inside you when you give without keeping score. pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/2970…
