In mainstream comics, I consider the letterer to be the first READER of a comic. We're the first to see the script & art married with dialogue. If your letterer doesn't understand something, or loves a particular scene, that's a good barometer of what's working...or not working.

Great tip. We do this a lot when working in animation ( VFX lighting/comp ) as well for similar purposes; to check luminance values, making sure the darkest/brightest areas of a frame are in balance.
