One year since ME Australia met with Health Minister @greghuntMP, asking for biomedical research funding & new clinical guidelines.
@MyalgicE invited Alison Hunter Memorial Fdn, Hummingbird Fdn for ME, @emergeaus and Prof Paul Fisher @latrobe. #pwME

It’s 2022 yet Australian guidelines treat #pwme and anyone with a CFS diagnosis like they are lazy, lying who wrongly think they are sick. #pwme #MyalgicEncephalomyelitis #MEICC @MyalgicE

Australia's CFS guidelines say there’s nothing physically wrong so look for psych causes: “no abnormal physical findings".
"Excluding other
disorders" makes it a diagnosis of exclusion or rubbish bin diagnosis.

Lovely to meet Yolandi from @Wombat_Rescue to hear about the challenges wombats face & their amazing work rehabilitating then releasing them back into the wild. We have such incredible wildlife here in 🇦🇺 (most of it found nowhere else) & can do more to look after it.

"...ME has acquired medical legitimacy." 🤔
Just like all over the world, in Australia there has been complete erasure of any recognition that may have existed 40 years ago.

Throwback to the time I found out about how Australia squandered what little money there was for medical research into ME and CFS.
Christine Hunter, the mother of Alison Hunter who died from ME, gave me this info. #pwme #Myalgic Encephalomyelitis

Part 3:...we don’t want a repeat of the last process: a million dollars given to a psychiatrist who studied neurathenia’ and ‘melancholia’ then wrote the Australian CFS guidelines. #pwME meaustralia.net/2018/05/06/m…
Makes me mad that @ian_hickie got involved, he’s a psychiatrist and should have said “no, this isn’t my area”. #pwme

Indeed the self-perpetuating cycle in Australia of misjudging viral-onset disease as psychiatric, therefore consulting mental health industry, thus re-inforcing the same bias, without ever consulting the robust biomedical research, is excruciatingly frustrating.

They knew back then.
If this had been the basis for biomedical research & the education of all Drs & HCPs an incalculable amount of suffering could have been avoided
