#Nell I’m in Derry so I had to pay my respects to Nell McCafferty today. How could I not. I didn’t know Nell but I know I’m grateful to her, and influenced by her.
I am a journalist so I’m going to report on the funeral mass. Eamon McCann spoke about remembering playing football with Nell as children. He said ‘journalists try but few can say they changed the world.
Nell changed the world. She changed Ireland. And she came from the Bogside to do that. For women’s rights and the rights of the downtrodden.
She was an instinctive socialist. Always on the side of the downtrodden and the outlaws. She made it ok for me to be outside the mainstream, say uncomfortable things. She put her head above the parapet.
Papers are full of praise for her now but that wasn’t always the way.
Ireland is a different and better place for the fact Nell McCafferty was in it.’

The Peace Bridge Bridgil for Palestine was packed tonight with people calling for an immediate ceasefire and an end to the genocide happening before our eyes in Gaza.
The US and Britain must immediately intervene, stop the sale of arms and end the genocide.
