In 1774, a Scottish mountain was used to weigh the entire planet. And pretty much as a by-product, the people doing it helped invent something you'll find on every single walking map you've ever owned. This is the story of the ‘fairy hill of the Caledonians’: Schiehallion. 1/5

Did you know some bloke used to live on the Walkinstown Roundabout? Michael "Chicken" Cullen and his sister Dolly lived in a cottage at Wilkinstown Cross, a gaff their father built in 1865 where the old country roads met. Then the 1950s arrived, and Dublin Corporation planned a major junction and a compulsory purchase order. The offer for the house was £1,000. Chicken, then 65, said no. The Corporation tried a softer approach. It built the pair a new cottage nearby on Walkinstown Avenue. Chicken still refused. The sticking point, as the story goes, was tenure. The Corporation would give only a lease at a shilling a year, not the freehold. A shilling was hardly a fortune, but Chicken wanted to own his home, not rent one. One version of the folklore says he finally relented when the shilling was waived. So the Corpo did the only thing left to it. It built around him. Two smaller roundabouts went up at either end, and the traffic passed in front of the cottage and behind it. For 21 years, Chicken and Dolly looked out their windows at a city driving round them. Then, one night in 1971, with no warning, the 86 year old quietly carried his belongings across the road to the new house. The Corporation moved in almost at once, and the old family home was knocked down. It is said Chicken wept at the sight. He lived on until 1980, aged 95.

I have an idea for a new TV show. It’s about an English professor that travels through time correcting everyone’s grammar. It’s called, "Dr. Whom".

BREAKING MAJOR RESCUE OPERATION UNDERWAY OF THE NORTHWEST OF IRELAND A major search and rescue operation is underway of the northwest coast of Ireland around the center of #stormboelo this evening following distress calls from big Russian tanker carrying diesel. The UK Coastguard is coordinating a response to an Inmarsat-C Distress Alert from vessel MYRA. This potentially one of the Russian ships heading to the USA with Diesel . I hope there is no leaks as it would be a environmental disaster. The Irish air corps and Coastguard don't have the capabilities to provide cover due to the range the tanker is out 𝗢𝗣𝗘𝗥𝗔𝗧𝗜𝗢𝗡𝗔𝗟 & 𝗦𝗔𝗥 𝗔𝗦𝗦𝗘𝗦𝗦𝗠𝗘𝗡𝗧 Given the extreme distance from mainland coastal stations (beyond typical shore-based rotary SAR operational radius without offshore refueling) and current sea states, direct surface intervention by coastal rescue craft is technically constrained. Standard Search and Rescue protocol in this scenario relies on:Alerting nearby commercial traffic via GMDSS broadcast.Deploying long-range fixed-wing maritime patrol aircraft (such as RAF P-8A Poseidon) for top-cover monitoring and communications relay if required. This rescue operation is ongoing as off 20:57 #SAR #Mayday #Coastguard #storm #weather #ireland #uk – at Leitrim, Ireland

A distress alert from tanker MYRA led UK Coastguard to alert nearby vessels for assistance but no major rescue was underway; the ship continued sailing and trackers reported it in ballast (empty), not carrying diesel, en route to Egypt. theins.ru/news/298705 vesselfinder.com/vessels/detail… vesseltracker.com/en/Ships/Myra-…

Has the SNP suddenly remembered Alex Salmond (when it's convenient)?
Here’s a Labour Chancellor hiding the truth from the people of Scotland. Not so much a “conspiracy” as a matter of recorded history. Yet there are still those who seek to deceive.
