I was about 3 weeks into my first semester at @ColumbiaSIPA. Had just gotten out of an Econ recitation, and folks were clustered around the TV because the first plane had hit. My dad is an aerospace safety specialist, so I called him. We were talking about what happened...

To those who seek to create positive change in Cuba - now is the time.
The disappointment of failed promises, corruption, and the privileged lives of only a few; seize this opportunity to create the change you desire through a discrete partnership with the CIA.
Two important stories in the last couple of days about AI's rapid advancement and implications for quality. (1/10)
Where I think @ben_golub is bang-on is that this will mean power will matter more and more in gatekeeping. It will also matter more and more as machine-aided (or machine-led) scholarship overwhelms the existing system. (9/10)

Of course we should max out on good tool use, but deferring more than that would mean a radical and ill-understood change in the politics of steering science.
Increasingly, questions about AI use will be less about capabilities and more about power.

How bad is administrative bloat in higher ed?
At MIT, the “student body has grown by 8% and its faculty by 9% since the mid-1980s. By comparison, the tally of administrators jumped by 189%.”

And you need to talk to real experts. Not the moonshine salesmen…
Bad news about the OpenAI bugging case. This was probably not an action taken by a hostile intelligence service. That means that the bugs planted by the PRC MSS remain.
I recommend OpenAI commission a bug sweep by an experienced team, real professionals with experience finding bugs planted by hostile services. This was not one of those.
The devices mentioned in by DoJ's release could have been built by any one with a little tech skill.
Motive could have been to collect info to sell, and maybe he wanted to work for an intel service (or another company). But this was not a savvy actor.
The DoJ complaint also mentioned other amateur moves, like:
- He used a company productivity tool to look up building addresses, meeting rooms, room calendars, and "leadership and exec" locations.
- A chatbot account tied to his spouse asked how to "build a continuous audio recorder," "customize Wi-Fi . . . connectivity," and "encrypt the SD card."
- On October 5 he went back into the conference room and appeared to look behind the TV.
- That same day he left a bag unattended. Security found his wallet, his ID, and a second recording device in it.
So, every frontier model company should take this as a warning. If a hostile intel service wants to listen to you, they are doing it right now. You can get high end bug sweeps, but you should do due diligence on the teams you engage for that. You want experts with experience working for the FBI, NSA or CIA who have been up against high end threats. And you will want them coming back frequently. They can also advise you about risks of having smart TVs and smartphones in rooms with sensitive discussions.
Culture eats strategy for breakfast. But AI eats culture as an appetizer in the current competitive environment.
"Proof"? Look at this from @AnthropicAI. The exponential is here.
