The British Empire was the greatest work of human civilisation this world has ever seen. It outlawed the slave trade and then hunted it to extinction across every ocean on earth. It put the rule of law on six continents. It built the railway, the telegraph, the modern world. And when it left, India, Canada, Australia and fifty more kept the lot. That is not conquest. That is inheritance. A quarter of the land on earth. A quarter of the people. Run from one wet island. Now ask what it did with that reach. Not what it took. What it built. It built the law. Around a third of the world's people live under legal systems descended from English common law. The presumption of innocence. Trial by jury. A judge who can rule against the government and keep his job. It built the machine age. The first intercity railway. The cable that joined Europe and America. By 1902 a telegraph ring circled the entire world, landing only on British soil. It built the knowledge. Newton. Darwin. Faraday. Turing. Berners-Lee. The machine you are reading this on is, from the physics up, a British invention with foreign parts. And it built a war on the slave trade. No great power had ever made war on the trade — until Britain did. Sixty years. Around 1,600 ships seized. Around 150,000 Africans freed. Around 2,000 British sailors dead doing it. Then the thing that proves the case. Every empire before it ended in fire. This one chose to go — and the nations it freed kept the lot. The courts. The parliaments. The language. Then they formed a club with the country that had ruled them. Fifty-six members. Four of them were never British at all. Former French and Portuguese colonies asked to join. Nobody applies to join the empire of a tyrant. Was it perfect? No empire is. Fine. Now name the empire that did better. Name the one that bled for sixty years to end the slave trade. Name the one whose former subjects kept its courts. Name the one that packed up and went home. There is one. Nobody keeps the chains of a master. They keep the gifts of a builder. Fifty-six nations kept them. That is the verdict — and it was not ours. It was theirs. Others apologise for our history. I tell it — properly, from the record, without the guilt. On behalf of the British people, I would like to apologise for the slave trade. I am sorry we were the first great power in history to turn its guns on it. I am sorry it cost us around 2,000 sailors to free 150,000 people they would never meet. I am sorry the rest of the world took so long to follow. Slavery did not begin with Britain. It is as old as civilisation. Babylon wrote it into law. Rome built an empire on it. The Vikings sold Englishmen through the slave market at Dublin. In 1625 Barbary corsairs took 60 men, women and children out of a Cornish church; by 1640 Parliament was told 3,000 to 5,000 English people were held in Algiers alone. Every great power of the age took part in the Atlantic trade. Portugal and Spain for a century before an English ship did. Then the Dutch, the French — and the British, who in the eighteenth century carried more than anyone. That is the record. It is not disputed here. Then a nation turned on the trade that had made it rich. Wilberforce's bill was beaten year after year. On 25 March 1807 it passed. Then Britain did the part the critics never mention — it sent the Royal Navy to enforce it. The West Africa Squadron sailed in 1808, two ships for 3,000 miles of coast, and hunted slavers for nearly sixty years. Britain paid Spain and Portugal to open their ships to search. HMS Black Joke ran down the slaver El Almirante in 1829 and found 466 people in her hold. Around 2,000 British sailors died doing it — most of fever, to free people they would never meet. 1,600 slave ships seized. 150,000 Africans set free. In 1833 Parliament borrowed £20 million to end slavery across the Empire. The debt was not finally redeemed until 2015. The United States needed a civil war. Cuba held slaves until 1886. Brazil until 1888 — eighty-one years after Westminster voted. Yes, we took part in the trade. Every power of the age did. None of them fought it like we did. So yes. I will apologise. I am sorry it cost us so much. I am sorry the rest of the world took so long to follow. That is not something you apologise for. That is something you teach. #history #britishhistory #royalnavy #westafricasquadron

In 1830 HMS PRIMROSE captured Spanish Slaver Velos Passagera rescuing 555 Africans destined for slavery. PRIMROSE was part of the Royal Navy's West Africa Sqn tasked with anti-slavery duties. Between 1808-60 the RN intercepted 1,600 slave ships, freeing over 150,000 Africans

Slavery was an evil in which people from every continent and region participated. We should be honest about the whole history, not select the parts that are politically convenient today, especially given Britain's leading role in ending the transatlantic slave trade. If Caribbean countries are asking Britain for a formal apology for Britain’s role in the transatlantic slave trade, will they also be asking the same of the descendants of African kingdoms, rulers and merchants who captured, sold and profited from the trade? On demands for reparations, whether through cash or debt relief, we have been down this track before. Twenty-five years ago, Jubilee 2000, Drop the Debt and Make Poverty History argued that cancelling the debts of poorer countries would give them a fresh start. More than $100 billion of debt was eventually written off, but many of those countries have since built up even bigger debts. Labour are already spending too much on Britain's welfare state, now is not the time for Andy Burnham to be providing global welfare. There is no reason British taxpayers today should be held financially responsible for things that happened generations before any of us were born. And I have even less patience for political elites in commonwealth countries who don’t know how to make their own citizens prosperous now looking for another opportunity to blame Britain. As Prime Minister, Andy Burnham should be Britain’s greatest defender. Instead, he is writing articles saying we need to confront our history (as if we haven't done enough of that) and considering another formal historical apology. Tony Blair already expressed Britain’s deep sorrow and regret for our role in the slave trade nearly twenty years ago. There is no need to do so again. This is all another navel-gazing distraction. The Commonwealth should be looking forward, not endlessly backwards. That means economic partnerships to make us all richer and deeper military and security cooperation against common threats. If every Commonwealth summit becomes an exercise in presenting Britain with demands for cash then we need to start asking if it is worth the effort.

Slavery was normal everywhere. ⛓️ Pharaohs. Romans. Vikings. 👑 Then one country's people said no. 🇬🇧 No army. No vote. ✊ 300,000 stopped buying sugar. 🍬 Nearly a million signed. One in every seventeen people in Britain. ✍️ Then the Navy went to sea. ⚓ 1,600 slave ships taken. 150,000 people freed. 🕊️ It cost a century and a fortune. Alfred the Great died on this day, 899. 🕯️ In 878 the Vikings took his hall at Christmas. 🔥 He hid in the Somerset marshes with twenty men. 🌾 In spring he sent word: meet me at the stone. ⚔️ Edington. He won. Then he built the towns, the navy, the laws and the schools. 🏰 His grandson united England. 👑 The only English king we ever called Great. 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 Help us keep the story of England alive. 📖 Be part of us. ☝️🇬🇧 Be Proud Of Us. 🙏🇬🇧

ONE LAW. ONE STANDARD. After 20 years in policing, I know how important consistency is. The public quickly loses trust when they see what appears to be different standards being applied to different groups. If face coverings are considered a serious issue when used by people protesting immigration, then that same standard must apply to everyone, whoever they are and whatever their politics. Street gangs, Antifa, pro Palestine marches, we have seen face coverings at such events with limited action or political intervention. Now after Dover and Portsmouth the establishment and MSM all of a sudden have a real interest and are disproportionally in my opinion challenging and targeting these particular people. I’ve seen first-hand how quickly public confidence disappears when people believe enforcement is selective. This isn’t about being left or right. It’s about fairness, consistency and policing without fear or favour.

One moment to leave my box then I'll get back in it. If you're uneducated enough to have an issue with the British government rightly making this statement, lemme put it very simply: -49,000 slave owners, approx 0.19% of the population at the time, were given money to buy them out of owning slaves. British taxpayers paid to free the slaves. -For decades during the 19th century, Britain dedicated 1/6th of it's entire Navy specifically to seek and capture other nations' slave ships to free the slaves on board. The economic cost was bore by the taxpayer. 2,000 British sailors lost their lives. -During the US Civil War, Pres Lincoln blockaded Cotton exports from the USA. This put more than half a million working Britons out of already very poorly paid work. After months, the mill owners worked a deal with the US govt to reopen trading. More than half a million working class Britons voted AGAINST the deal citing that they didn't ever want to work with goods produced from slavery again. About half as many (24,000 ish) Brits died from malnourishment, disease etc in the affected cotton factory communities as a direct result of that action as ever owned slaves. -Britain paid £400,000 to Spain to convince it to stop its slave trade. It also placed diplomatic pressure on France to stop them too. Of every empire that ever took part in slavery, Britain is the ONLY ONE that grew a conscience, stopped its own, and then set out to stop everybody else without any outside encouragement. And it is also the only one that has maintained a successful and genuinely beneficial diplomatic network to lift up and empower its former territories- the Commonwealth- which has helped ex-colonies outperform their peer nations in almost every way ever since. Not to mention endless and unwavering humanitarian relief when a hurricane rips through their islands every season, or when an earthquake buries their brothers and sisters under their own houses. The British taxpayer has bore the cost of all of that. Britons voted in favour of that responsibility in the 19th century, decades before anybody else grew a conscience of their own- even African Kingdoms such as the Asanti Empire who only stopped slaving when Britain took over Ghana and made it illegal. You reparationsit types don't harass modern-day Turks over the 6-8 million slaves that passed through the Ottoman Slave trade, or modern-day Ghanaians for the millions that the Ghana and Asanti empires captured, abused, and traded in the Trans-Sharan and Transatlantic trades. You don't even get on at the Arab and African countries who still enable slavery today. Why? There is no other demographic/nation/country for which people feel so empowered to blame the crimes of the most miniscule proportion of its ancestry, which were undone and atoned for by exponentially more of its ancestry, on an entire diaspora that has lived for generations with no direct culpability in said crimes. Every population in the world has been a victim to another population at a given time. The following paragraph should be the one that sticks from this whole rant: The working class, poor, destitute British man and woman who rotted in workhouses for centuries had more in common with their African slave counterparts than they ever did their compatriot masters. That's exactly why they bloody well did something about it. British people en masse stood WITH the slaves. Not with their feet on their necks. Reparationism towards the British nation is just politics of division, meant to absolve commonwealth governments of their own failures towards their people at the expense of a population who have never committed the crime they are demanding reparations for, and whose ancestors paid the human and economic price for for the last 2 centuries. This is the last post I'll make on the matter.
🚨 BREAKING The UK Government says it “does not and will not pay reparations” for Britain's role in the transatlantic slave trade. The remarks were made today by a spokesperson for Prime Minister Andy Burnham as Jamaica steps up its campaign for reparatory justice. #Reparations #Jamaica #JamRadioNews #AndyBurnham

Britain WON the SHORTEST WAR ever fought. Its terms: SLAVERY DIES. 🇬🇧 25 August 1896. The Sultan of Zanzibar dies suddenly. Before his body is cold, his cousin Khalid walks into the palace with an army behind him and declares himself Sultan. Britain says no. Not because of who he is. Because of what the last Sultan had signed: the slave trade through Zanzibar was to be strangled, and a usurper with 2,800 armed men and a harem full of slaves is not going to honour that. In the harbour sit 5 Royal Navy ships. St George. Philomel. Racoon. Thrush. Sparrow. The consul sends the palace an ultimatum. Stand down by 9 o'clock on the morning of the 27th. Khalid replies that he does not believe the British would fire on him. At 9:00 the flag is still flying. At 9:02 every gun in the bay opens up. The palace answers with bronze cannon 200 years old. The Sultan's only ship, the yacht Glasgow, fires on a British cruiser. She has no chance. She sinks so shallow her masts never go under. Then comes the detail nobody expects. British sailors row into the smoke to save the Sultan's crew they have just sunk. Every one of them is pulled alive from the water. At 9:40 the palace flag comes down. Khalid has already run for the German consulate. 38 minutes. Shorter than your commute. By the afternoon there is a new Sultan, and Britain's terms are simple: slavery dies. Within the year the decree is signed. The pub-quiz fact hides the real story. We tell the whole of our history. I’m done with allowing people to insult my ancestors like this. No other group of people on Earth would allow their forebears to be insulted like this. 🇬🇧 My ancestors were the first people in history to fight to end slavery. 🇬🇧 They spread the common law across the world. 🇬🇧 They stopped Indians from burning widows alive so that they wouldn’t have to pay to feed them after their husbands had died. 🇬🇧 They stood alone against the Nazis. 🇬🇧 They invented and built the modern world with technology and medicine that started to defeat death and disease. 🇬🇧 They invented economics and democracy as we know it. My ancestors were great people. Without them, the world would be an immeasurably darker, more wicked place. Never again let entitled actors who known nothing about anything browbeat you into feeling shame for your ancestors. Britain, and Western civilisation, are the greatest expressions of human flourishing in the history of the world. Be proud of the ancestors who fought and toiled and sacrificed for that. Don’t ever be ashamed of the greatness of our inheritance. Live up to it.
