Wise words from a trio of experts from @UofMaryland. You cannot achieve literacy success by cutting time for social studies and science. As they note, this “has been tried and proven to fail.” Prioritize social studies instead. marylandmatters.org/2026/07/…

Really appreciate this new post about the importance of social studies to literacy, and how programs like We the People and its implementation in Delaware with a new federal grant are helping to set the stage improvements.
Promising developments in social studies:
A new KY curriculum.
A new DE program combining civics & literacy.
A free webinar on a new US history curriculum from @4qmTeaching teaching on 8.13!

“8 of 10 Americans telling us we need more civic education is a wake-up call to educators & policymakers.” There is tremendous opportunity to advance civics education by expanding time for social studies in grades K-8, which also support literacy goals.

Interesting new data on youth voter registration from @CivicYouth shows mixed results. Positives: overall #s are up, DE is up 8% Area for growth: 18-19 year olds are lagging. Voting is a critical outcome of effective civics education - we have more to do.

Interesting findings from @pewresearch describe the distinct ways American engage in civic life, as Mobilizers (9%), Connectors (28%), Spectators (31%), or Outsiders (31%).
Which are you now?
Which do you want to be?
What do we want our students to be?

School districts need to stop equating ELA teachers with literacy experts, and when former ELA teachers become principals & central office leaders, they use their positions to marginalize other subject areas to promote “literacy” which is not their expertise.
"NAEP’s governing board recently announced that states can, at no cost, opt into state-level reporting for the civics assessments." This is a great opportunity for states, including Delaware, to help support more and better civics education. #CivxNow fordhaminstitute.org/ohio/co…
If you are surprised to hear it took legislative action to ensure K-5 students get recess daily, you may also not realize that many kids don’t get science or social studies daily either.
“Effective civic education can help young people understand institutions but it cannot, by itself, persuade them that those institutions deserve their trust…[the problem is] ultimately political rather than educational.” open.substack.com/pub/theren…
The recent issue of @UDelaware magazine highlights the ways UD "continues to shape and mend the fabric of America" at #americas250thbirthday, including the ways the Delaware Center for Civics Education contributes to this work @UDBidenSchool. #CivNow

Our founding was neither “a flawless act of genius or an irredeemable original sin..let the anniversary be..a reminder that the right to govern ourselves is also the obligation to govern ourselves well.”

Seems incredibly reasonable, doesn’t it?
It’s a bit dangerous but I’m glad to see people are finally standing up against the marginalization of social studies in elementary schools! #sschat

🏆 Tiny trophy. Big mission.
Congrats to Grp. D, winners of the #ProjectCitizen World Cup Trophy at the Delaware Summer Institute, sponsored by the Delaware Center for Civics Education.
For 60+ years, teachers have spent their summers strengthening civic education.

Insightful research showing how declining rates of teen drivers hampers voter registration. We need to ensure voters are registered before they leave high school if we want democracy to reflect the views of the nation. thecivicscenter.org/research…
It starts with how we schedule the DAY. Shanahan continues to irresponsibly call for 2-hour ELA blocks, seemingly oblivious to the impact that has on choking off social studies & science instruction for elementary students. Someone please teach this man about opportunity cost.
This is a HUGE mental hurdle to improving reading outcomes.
De-implementation starts at how we schedule our blocks. ⬇️
