How effective is your organisation’s leadership development programme?
Can leadership be effectively ‘taught’ in the classroom, or by attending a leader-development conference, seminar or event?
Genuine and meaningful leader development occurs when we ‘do’ repeatedly, and routinely exemplify a morally & ethically sound set of values & behaviours. Values that aren’t just buzzwords written on an office wall, but ones that are positively reinforced daily by staff & leaders alike.
Undoubtedly all methods of learning have merit, but which ones truly stick when it comes to organisational leader development? Are these methods the right ones currently used in your workplace, and how can you make your leadership training more experiential, hands-on, and part or your routine daily business?
*Model for illustrative purposes only - challenges to this research exists.

Myth: Possessing relevant knowledge and experience alone does not make you an effective mentor.
While coaching and mentoring are distinct approaches, the line between them is often blurred because they harness the same core skills: active listening, effective questioning, and facilitating reflection, combined with action planning. In fact, mentoring is most effective when coaching skills are used appropriately.
Mentoring is often described as ‘coaching plus’, as a mentor needs the same skill set and attributes as a coach. However, what a mentor brings in addition is their own knowledge and experience in a particular field and should be the reason why the mentee has chosen that particular mentor.
Mentoring has a typically longer-term focus than coaching which seeks to address improvement of a specified task of skill. It is also focused on the relationship between the mentee and mentor in eliciting and exploring areas of development and exploring possible solutions.

I've appreciated engaging with @Fubler over the last few years. As disgusted as I am with the PLP, they've done well in recruiting 'good' candidates on the surface. My hope is that when these 'good' candidates get into these spaces, they hold their colleagues accountable.
