Every time I go to Manassas Battlefiled, and it's often, I think of those who are yet to be discovered. A park ranger called it hallowed ground.
Yesterday, Arlington National Cemetery laid to rest an unknown Union soldier with full military funeral honors with escort in Section 81.
Discovered during archaeological excavations at Manassas National Battlefield Park, the young soldier-estimated to have been 16 to 19 years old-was connected to the Second Battle of Manassas. The Office of Army Cemeteries coordinated his interment alongside two other unknown Union soldiers recovered from the same park and buried at Arlington in 2018.
Soldiers from 3d U.S. Infantry Regiment (The Old Guard), the U.S. Army Band "Pershing's Own" and U.S. Army's 3d U.S.
Infantry Regiment (The Old Guard) Caisson Detachment rendered final honors. An Army Arlington Lady accepted the flag on behalf of the unknown soldier's family.

Arlington National Cemetery honors a young Union soldier whose remains were recovered from Manassas National Battlefield Park more than 160 years after the Civil War. Though his identity remains unknown, his service and sacrifice are remembered.
