This thread is a foray into the cult called The Family International (formerly Teens for Christ and then Children of God), founded by David Berg in Huntington, California, in 1968. It now has dealings all over the world, including (worryingly) India.
TIL it is a widely held belief that the Arab conquest of Sindh happened because Sindhi Hindu pirates kidnapped Arab Muslim female pilgrims. This is part of the Pakistani state curriculum (text is the Chach Nama). Am I allowed to take an Oct 7th "it never happened" stance on this?

Katon Moyong, popularly known as Aborman, is described as a Siang hydropower activist. That label undersells him.
He is an environmental engineer. He understands the technical case for a mega dam better than most of the people defending it. And he still says the communities of the Siang will not accept one on the main course of the river.
When officials claimed "outsiders" were instigating the opposition, he pointed out that his forum members are the people who live on that land. The outsiders, he said, are the agencies that arrived to build on it.
He doesn't just protest. He quotes Article 371(H) and argues that the state is passing off "selective consent" from a few individuals as the voice of an entire community. He asks for the Adi people's traditional customary framework, Adi Bane, to be respected, where decisions are taken collectively.
He tried to collect a mass petition across 54 villages, from Boleng to Geling. After 19 villages, an FIR was filed against him. The petition stopped there.
Last week he was detained in Delhi while talking to the media outside Arunachal Bhawan.
An engineer who reads the project report, a constitutional voice who knows the law, a community organiser who walked village to village, and a man who keeps showing up after being booked and detained.
That is not just an activist. That is someone defending a river, a law and a people's right to say no.
India talks a lot about consent. The Siang is where it is being tested.

I've done this with Mum in Kyoto. The owner was an older woman, the patrons were her neighbourhood friends (two men,one woman). We were a little unsure, but they told us to come in. One man knew English & translated for everyone. He told us about his travels to Mumbai in the 80s.
The owner understood from the man translating that we were vegetarian. She made us a really nice stiryfry & recommended a nice sake.The man's wife then taught u to use chopsticks. Another man came in, saw us, and started talking excitedly. That night is one of my core memories.
In contrast, I visited a temple with a gaushala run by a matha in Dakshina Kannada. The priest was explaining how all the cows there were rescued by the RSS, etc. He said the cows & their babies would live at the gaushala till they died. Real work with actual empathy and impact.

A friend from the Dakshina Kannada region says this is common here. To be clear, I did not think anyone should have bothered them. I was just marvelling at the whole thing. Not something you see often in most other parts of the country.
In a Devi kshetra in Karnataka. Saw a Muslim mother (not in hijab) and 3 hijabi daughters praying and taking teertha from the priest and drinking it. Very surreal sight. No one bothered them.
