It’s all about clarity and respect for everyone's hard work! Enforcing a rule where medical practitioners use their protected titles: "Medical Doctor" or "Physician", would immediately protect both scholarly integrity & pt safety. Clear titles help everyone feel safe and valued!

To resolve scope & academic overlap/deception, mandating protected titles like 'medical doctor' or 'physician' in healthcare is the solution. Patients get instant clarity on roles, clinical safety improves, and the broader academic scholarly community is respected. Everyone wins

I believe Ancient Rome, Early Christianity, Medieval Europe used it; in 14C it entered English. From 4C it meant religious scholar and from 12C highest academic attainment. Physicians ruled early 14C, but 'doctor' shifted late 14C and became standard for UK medicine in 18/19C 🤷🏿

When those who earned the scholarly right to a title are gatekept by those with courtesy privilege, it risks an Animal Farm fable situation. Clarity & respect for all hard work means enforcing protected titles like 'Physician' so both academic scholars & medics feel valued."

When patients hear "Doctor," they bundle clinical authority with elite academic scholar achievement. Mandating "Medical Doctor" or "Physician" untangles this web—leaving "Doctor" for education, while explicitly labeling the clinician's practical function - everyone wins🏆🤷🏿

If patient safety were the real priority over social prestige, then stop gatekeeping, respect the academic root of the PhD, and champion already established legally protected titles: Physician etc. FY1 and Consultant with PhD using the same title isnt pt safety or is it 🤷🏿 !

These days it is difficult to differentiate btw real concerns vs attack on HCPs..... so sad and at times shameful.... use to be from pts but now it comes from 'colleagues'

Dear @wesstreeting Comparing data between 2016 -2020 and 2020-2024? As per the @gmcuk The difference in employer referral rates between ethnic minority and white doctors has fallen by 61% For non-Uk versus UK graduates, the difference in referral rates has dropped by 69% The regulator says it is now on track to hit its target of eliminating disproportionate employer fitness to practise referrals by the end of 2026. From someone who works with the GMC on tackling referral inequity Let’s not encourage dog whistling 👍🏽 Much regards
Katie’s right. This is absolutely mad. Guess who created this mess? The Conservatives. Guess which Government has just passed emergency legislation to clean up this mess: Labour. Don’t worry, Katie. Lots done, lots more to do.
