Under the old regime (Twitter 1.0), the Blue Check wasn't just identity verification, it was a feudal grant given to the privileged. It was decided by the safety teams and given to journalists, politicians, and approved elites. It was a signal that said, This person is part of the in-group. Their voice matters more than yours. Elon Musk commoditized verification for $8. He decoupled Identity from Status. Suddenly, a random bro with a good argument could have the same reach as a New York Times journalist or an EU bureaucrat. What EU is doing is a hostile takeover of the Free Speech. But the far more dangerous point here is the demand for researcher access. To the casual observer, this sounds benign. Who could oppose research? But we need to look at who these researchers actually are. In the context of the Digital Services Act (DSA), vetted researchers are almost exclusively NGOs, academic institutions, and think tanks that are funded, directly or indirectly, by the very governments they are supposed to be auditing. Direct state censorship is legally difficult and optically terrible. It looks like tyranny. But if the government funds a university Disinformation Lab, and that lab uses special access to X’s data to generate a report claiming that "narratives critical of immigration policy are linked to hate speech," the government can then point to that independent scientific report to demand content takedowns. It is a circular validation loop. The State funds the Researcher -> The Researcher finds the "Harm" -> The State uses the "Harm" to regulate the Platform. They want a return to the curated consensus. They want an internet where Verified means Trusted by the State, Transparency means Audited by the State, and Safety means Safe for the State.
