I havent been this excited about a new #SEO tool since I first saw Web Position Gold... Okay, that's probably not fair - @screamingfrog meets the grade, and I've used some pretty cool stuff, but this one is an incredibly useful time saver. searchcommander.com/blog/sea…
My plane is delayed because a caterer walked off with the employee handbook. Federal law requires that they have one for each crew member so they're printing one at the check-in desk. It's over 600 pages...
So how's your day gone?
Security called me at 6:12 AM today.
"Patch every PHP server immediately."
I asked what happened.
"Two critical vulnerabilities. Remote code execution. No authentication required."
Cool.
How many PHP servers do we have?
According to inventory: 12
According to reality:
Nobody knows.
We found one running WordPress.
Three running old internal tools.
One under someone's desk.
Two inside vendor appliances.
A forgotten employee directory from 2016.
And a server named:
PHP-OLD-DO-NOT-TOUCH
Naturally, that one runs payroll exports.
Then we found a PHP 5.6 box.
I asked who owned it.
The documentation said:
BRIAN.
Brian left in 2019.
We called Brian.
He said:
"Oh wow, that's still running?"
Excellent.
By 8 AM, leadership joined the incident call.
CEO:
"Can hackers actually get in?"
Security:
"Potentially yes."
CEO:
"Without a password?"
Security:
"Yes."
CEO:
"Then why do WE need passwords?"
Not the lesson.
Finance asked if we could wait until the weekend to patch because downtime affects revenue.
Security explained that the alternative was letting strangers execute code on our servers.
Finance asked for a cost comparison.
At 9:17, someone suggested temporarily taking the vulnerable websites offline.
Marketing refused.
"Our campaign is live."
So for the next hour, the company officially decided maintaining a landing page for 20% off webinar registration was more important than preventing remote server takeover.
We finally patched everything we could find.
Then our scanner discovered another PHP server.
Hostname:
TEMP-PHP-2014
Uptime:
4,512 days.
Nobody knows what it does.
Nobody owns it.
Nobody can shut it down.
But every time we block network access, the warehouse stops printing shipping labels.
Security has classified it as critical infrastructure.
It is running PHP 5.4.
The vulnerability has existed longer than half our employees.
The emergency patch took four hours.
Finding out what PHP actually runs took eleven.
The internet isn't held together with code.
It's held together with servers everyone is afraid to turn off.
I finally tried the plug in yesterday that @martinibuster wrote about this summer searchenginejournal.com/new-… and was left literally speechless. Today I burned up the rest of my free credits and paid for a year. Just !$%king amazing.

Was that the voice of Johnny Carson on the University of Nebraska commercial during @fox12oregon during the @oregonfootball @HuskerFootball game?
This is NOT good enough. I had to look hard for a confirmation that my request for desperate help went through. Why make your visitors go through that?
Riding in the back of a @Tesla this screen reminds me of getting killed by poison gas in an old video game.
Literally my first time buying tix with @Ticketmaster. Total fail. Tried the app too. No tix, no order history. I got a welcome a verification email but no receipt. Glad I got a screenshot.
After dealing with two hacked web servers this past week, I went to @GoogleTrends and saw interest in "wordpress hacked" is up 750% over last year and 5000% over last month!

🚨 DESMAN STEPHENS II JUST SENT A MESSAGE 😳
After delivering a HUGE hit on Oregon QB Dante Moore, Desman Stephens II wasn’t done. He got up laughing, turned toward the Oregon sideline, and appeared to mock the Ducks before dapping up his teammates.
#DesmanStephensII #Oregon
I grew up a Trojans fan and living in Oregon I'm a Beavers fan and an avowed Duck hater, but that shot was a literal crime. Suspend Stevens from school. He was laughing afterward...
I googled for "USC v Ducks game" and saw that it hadn't started yet, and I put my phone down. A couple of minutes later a Walmart commercial suddenly started playing with @YouTube all by itself.
This is not an animated gif or a looping video - Trying to change my clients five locations at @GoogleMyBiz back to winter hours closing at 5. It's not new @rustybrick since it didn't work in June either, when I had to change to summer hours and I tried on both @googlechrome and @MicrosoftEdge. Yeah the @googlemaps app does work, but shouldn't be necessary. Test it yourselves! #LocalSEO
In case you were wondering,
on this survey of 103 Google ranking factors, the number
one most negative impact is... blocked by robots.txt.
Since we published the big Google Ranking Factors Expert Survey, I’ve shared many of the graphics with clients. A good chart can often explain a complex SEO concept *instantly*
So we went BIGGER 🌎
We took all 103 ranking factors from the survey and put them into one giant mega-graphic.
It’s seriously huge, and it can help folks see at a glance which "factors" experts believe help/hurt your visibility in traditional Google search results + AI answers (1/2)
Just saw a @fox12oregon TV commercial showing how to add them as a preferred source on Google.
Finally letting this expire... I think it was another 2am "bright idea" I had while at a @Pubcon over 10 years ago.
Years of typing Win+H to engage @Microsoft Voice Access typing and now that's suddenly changed to Alt+Shift+B.
