Sellers can now run a discount that only new customers can use.
A new "Limit to new customers" switch on a discount code: first-time buyers get the discount, buyers who have already bought from you don't. First-purchase offers that don't also discount your existing customers.

I think I agree with this in a qualified fashion: for those government apps which are bad simply because nobody has scheduled 6 engineer weeks to make them good, golden age.
For those government apps which are broken because we find it difficult to make policy decisions, new UI.

The IRS is finally getting dragged into the 21st century. 🏛️💻
The Senate Finance Committee just advanced the Taxpayer Assistance and Service (TAS) Act in a massive 26-1 bipartisan vote. If this legislation passes, it will fundamentally overhaul how you interact with the IRS, forcing the agency to modernize its technology and respect taxpayer timelines. Here is exactly what the TAS Act means for your business and your tax refunds:
1. A Strict 12-Month Clock on Refunds: Right now, the IRS is not actually required to act on your refund claims at all. The TAS Act legally forces the IRS to issue a determination on a refund claim within 12 months.
2. Mandatory Digitization: The bill requires the IRS to accept and process all tax returns and amended returns electronically, and forces them to use optical character recognition (OCR) to digitize paper correspondence.
3. The Electronic "Mailbox Rule": Your electronic submission will be considered legally timely as long as you authorize it by the due date, provided the IRS receives it no more than three business days later.
4. Upgraded Online Accounts: The legislation mandates major upgrades to the IRS online portals, including new public dashboards that track real-time call volumes, backlogs, and wait times. It also finally allows tax practitioners to access client accounts without needing to log in to each one separately.
The National Association of Tax Professionals (NATP) is actively lobbying Senate leadership to advance the Taxpayer Assistance and Service (TAS) Act to a full Senate floor vote following its near-unanimous 26-1 approval in the Senate Finance Committee. On September 15, 2026, the NATP sent a formal letter to Senate Finance Committee Chairman Mike Crapo and Ranking Member Ron Wyden, urging them to work with Senate leadership to ensure the bill does not stall. The organization is leveraging the bipartisan committee vote to pressure lawmakers, with NATP CEO Scott Artman stating that the vote proves "better taxpayer service and reasonable standards for paid tax return preparers are not partisan goals".
While the bill expands your protections, it also accelerates your reporting obligations. The TAS Act will require you to file Form 1099-series information returns with the IRS by January 31, completely eliminating the current March 31 electronic filing deadline.
A modernized IRS means faster refunds, but it also means faster, automated enforcement.

Joining the Tech Force has been one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. From helping build the IRS app to open-sourcing the first compliance tool for the government with @shl, the opportunities to make a real impact are incredible.
Thank you, @SamCorcos , for making this possible. I’m excited to work closely with @as400495 and his team, who are making history at NDS.
And a big thank you to @JohnCafazza, @taigrr , and @tylertaewook for the warm welcome. Excited for what’s ahead!

One of the smartest book covers of all time:
The Penguin Books rerun of the The Work of Art in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction (1935) by the author Walter Benjamin.
Whoever at Penguin came up with this.. I salute you 🫡

Finished Michael Lewis' new book, Blockers. Some fascinating stories about DOGE vs. civil service (all end in similar, depressing fashion) and the determined efforts of @shl to fix an IRS water fountain.

Thanks.
The endpoint mostly waits on I/O, and 3 servers is our redundancy floor, so Rust's speed wouldn't have saved anything. Go was simpler: one dependency on top of its standard library vs 10–12 crates in Rust, builds in seconds, and our team can review the changes.

Inspired by @dhh, we moved a high-traffic @gumroad endpoint from Rails to Go.
It only checks an email webhook's signature and queues a job, yet ran our full Rails app on 12 servers.
Go runs it on 3 smaller ones, in 11 MB of memory. 86% cheaper, saving about $14k a year.
Over the last two weeks, we cut about $8.4k a month (~$100k a year) from @gumroad's AWS bill.
Several of the changes made things faster, not just cheaper. Here's what we changed. 🧵
