We should remember this forgotten hero.
According to the 1941 Census, Noakhali district was approximately 82% Muslim and 17% Hindu. When the horrific anti-Hindu violence broke out in October-November 1946, this man stood firmly against the tide of terror.
He was Rajendralal Raychaudhuri, the zamindar of Karpara village in Noakhali. He mobilised his armed retainers, including Nepali guards equipped with firearms, and personally took up arms to defend Hindus against the attackers.
But he was more than a zamindar. He was the president of the Hindu Mahasabha in Noakhali, a prominent advocate in Bengal, and a follower of Dr. Shyama Prasad Mukherjee.
In a district where Hindus were a vulnerable minority, Rajendralal Raychaudhuri was their protector and a pillar of strength. He repeatedly used his influence and resources to defend Hindus against Islamic persecution and intimidation.
Yet, his contribution has largely disappeared from public memory, neglected by the secular and communist politician in India and West Bengal.
If we remember Gopal Mukherjee for his role in defending Hindus, we must also remember Rajendralal Raychaudhuri. His courage and sacrifice deserve a rightful place in our history.

Irfan Habib wrote an article in HT before the excavation started. He argued that the ASI should not go deeper than 2 metres because the dispute pertains to medieval India and any depth more than that would yield material culture of the ancient India and a brick of the Kushan period could be used as a evidence of a Hindu structure. The Muslim side took the cue and pleaded with the HC to prescribe a 2-metre depth limit to the ASI. The court asked the ASI to reply. The agency argued that limiting the depth would be against the principles of archaeology. It would be an incomplete and meaningless exercise. A couple of months before, Habib had admitted of a structure beneath the earth but called it ‘a residential quarter for marginalised sections.’ All his roguery has been unmasked in my book India’s Rogue Historians.
