over the past few weeks, we leaked thousands of API keys across the NYC subway!
please don't try this at home.
This is so inevitable at a certain scale. Rerun of the Google/Facebook playbook.
I estimate the CI system is a harder problem to solve at scale: distributed computation with common failure expected. I wonder if they use bazel and, e.g., @buildbuddy
New on our Engineering blog: Creating in-house source control.
In May, we merged around 2,500 code changes per day. In September, we merged more than 30,000 per day. As a result, we became bottlenecked by developer infrastructure built for human (rather than agent) scale.
Here, we share how we built a new version control system—and fully migrated our monorepo from git—in five months: anthropic.com/engineering/re…
EXTRA! EXTRA! READ ALL ABOUT IT!
The Morning Build, Vol. 1 is out. A real, printed newspaper, hot off the press and on the streets of SF this week.

If you're going to Bazelcon this year in Amsterdam, BuildBuddy is co-hosting a happy hour with Google Cloud. We'd love to see you there!

Big thanks to @buildbuddy for returning as a Platinum sponsor of BazelCon 2026, and for hosting Happy Hour with Google Cloud after day 1!
Join us Wednesday, October 14 at 6:30pm!

Power of Bazel: I touched a header that has the convolution implementation. Bazel rebuilt and reran only the tests that use convolution (took it 7s), greatly saving the time.

@buildbuddy is amazing. Saved 23,000 actions minutes so far. CI is still at a P90 of 5m and we've climbed past 15 production services and 1m lines of code @PerimeterCmpute
Great reason to use @bazelbuild and @buildbuddy! Remote caching and remote execution are the answer to this explosion in test runs & CI usage - we're seeing it across all of our customers. Never do the same work twice!
At Anthropic, Claude now writes 80% of our code. Engineers ship 8x more code per quarter.
Side effect: Tests grew 10x. CI jobs up 25x in 6 months. Here's what helped us scale:

Codex CLI can now be built for Windows MSVC runtime fully hermetically in remote executors.
This was the final validation pass for the MSVC support in hermetic-llvm project.

This process is so heavy that it would be simply impracticable to do in normal circumstances.
This is made possible thanks to Remote Builds distributed on thousands of cores using @buildbuddy.
It's done as part of the same graph as the final target. This is madness...
Heir is powered by @bazelbuild and @buildbuddy 🥰
"you can't do math on encrypted data"
ring homomorphisms: ...and I took that personally.
homomorphic encryption is some of the most "but *how*?!" math I know: a server does inference on your data while it's still encrypted, then computes a (correct!) answer it cannot read, to a question it cannot see
@Google and @jeremyjkun just open-sourced a compiler for it 🧵

BuildBuddy is literally magic. If I ran the stuff it gets done in minutes on my laptop, it would explode.

Bazel is a superpower
Bazel is seriously underappreciated. Clone of Google’s internal Blaze, it’s cross-language, battle-tested, and extensible. Decades of Google engineering expertise.
My favorite part: aggressive caching. I run all tests; it reruns only what changed, tracked by hashes. I’ve never seen it miss a change.
2.5s rebuild + test.
