Derry Girls is set during the 1990s, when Northern Ireland was an active warzone and had a 98% white population. Several episodes reference the fact no one wants to come there, or show the girlsโ microaggressions to other races/nationalities, such as Chinese and Ukrainian.

Thereโs literally an entire episode ABOUT the lack of racial diversity in Derry because no one wanted to live in the north of Ireland during the troubles why would immigrants willingly move TO a war zone ๐ญ๐ญ
Very rough figure because thereโs no official record but there were about 5000 non-white people in the ENTIRETY of the north. The 1991 UK census didnโt even have a question about skin colour on the version that was sent out in the north because the non-white population was so microscopically small it wasnโt considered worth investigating
