Significant progress on devolution has only been made when there has been a very senior champion in government (Osborne and Rayner). Well you can’t get more senior than the prime minister…
The devolution revolution can hit the ground running. The English Devolution and Community Empowerment Act largely gives the power to get cracking across skills, housing, transport, the economy, and much more, setting devolution by default. It’s already brought £12.5bn of integrated budgets in scope. The determination softened on widening devolution and on mayors recently, with a compelling offer for all areas that should be fired back up. And councils as the foundations of devolution and often the delivery arm need resourcing beyond short term programmes. But for real change it needs a much deeper cultural change across Whitehall - and the scale of that challenge can’t be underestimated. A lot to do, yes, but a big prize!

Calling all councillors! Last chance to take our survey. Are allowances just reward? How do you combine your duties with work? Is abuse putting people off standing? research.net/r/LGCCllrs421st… @CCACllrs @LondonLibDems @reformparty_uk @lgaindependent @TheGreenParty

These moves will cause nervousness in #localgov about the government's commitment to devolution and public service reform. Many will be very said to see McMahon leave the government, his commitment and passion for the sector meant he was viewed as true ally in government.
McMahon sacked and Gould moved to DfE lgcplus.com/politics/devolut…

I’m already exhausted by all the local election coverage which presumes politics is just one never ending popularity contest. Mayors and councils being elected today will have 3-4* years to make an impact, a bit more interest in what they’re going to do with power would be nice

Thanks James. It feels like the right time to make this move. On to the next chapter in LGC's 169 year history...
Good decision by @lgcplus @sjcalkin to cease the printed edition. Their online offer is very decent and reactive to the localgov agenda on a daily basis. I haven't looked at a printed copy in years.

In light of reports in @thetimes today that the government wants new unitaries to have a minimum population of 500k, this article I wrote last time #localgov was on the reorganisation merry go round might be of interest. Reorganisation: Does size matter? lgcplus.com/politics/governa…

It's from 2020 so population numbers will have changed slightly, but back then there were only 11 unitaries with populations greater than 400,000, with the average way below that, serving a population of 272,000. @lgcplus

Of course we can add North Yorkshire and Somerset to the <400k list so that will push the average up, but important to acknowledge 500k is not currently the norm.
