Even just a few hours in Nikko's historic center is enough to see fine examples of traditional architecture that flow into the surrounding landscape. #travel
Not exactly prime hiking weather, early October in Nikko, but attractive nonetheless. #Japan
One more unexpected highlight of Western Mongolia was Khetsuu Khad, a rocky outlier on the southern shore of the otherwise flat desert surrounding Khyargas Lake. Not just a pretty landscape, but also an important nesting ground for cormorants who fly up for their summer holidays.
Always a good time up on Kyrchyn at the #WorldNomadGames - wandering the yurt camps, taking lots of portraits, plenty of song and dance, and suddenly the whole day has flown by. #WNG2026
This is my 4th #WorldNomadGames in #Kyrgyzstan, and Kyrchyn Jailoo continues to be my favorite place to wander around and take photos. So much color, and such a showcase of Kyrgyz traditions, that a day at the yurt village never fails to impress. #WNG2026
Golden eagles are arguably the most famous aspect of Western #Mongolia for foreign travelers, and a day with the eagle hunters certainly does not disappoint, even in summer when it's just a quick demo of the real thing.
I never tire of proclaiming how amazing Saimaluu-Tash is to anyone who will listen, so when @CNNTravel came asking for pitches this was the first thing that came to mind. One of the best historic spots in Kyrgyzstan, though the timing can be a bit tricky.

Among foreign travelers, Western #Mongolia is arguably most famous for its eagle hunting traditions, and meet the eagles and hunters are a nearly-mandatory itinerary addition. Beneath the slopes of Tsambagarav, around a dozen or more eagle hunters welcome guests to their gers.
One more set from the series 'old photos of things I was writing about recently' is a perennial favorite: the Ak-Suu Transverse hike. Everybody wants to go to Ala-Kol, but there's a whole 50km to either side that are just as amazing and with far fewer crowds.
Very much after the fact, but I had cause to go back through these photos of #Naryn's Shaar #waterfall and remember all over again how spectacular it is. #DiscoverKyrgyzstan
Though not traditionally a fan of long-daytrip-tour-group tourism, I can begrudgingly admit that in places like #Kazakhstan with limited transport options it is a very efficient way to get a very brief glimpse at beautiful things.
Finally got the chance to visit the #Almaty Museum of Arts for the first time since they opened last summer - more or less the reason we planned a little trip to #Kazakhstan last month, and very much worth the trip.
