Wow. Shaun Tan’s Hometown is extraordinary. A book you don’t simply read, you wander into. Beautiful, strange, haunting and packed with images that demand you stop and look again. Picture book art at its absolute best.

I find it really odd that some teachers seem determined to take the teach out of teaching. Teachers aren’t machines. Pupils aren’t machines. Evidence matters, but the making teaching a “science” risks damaging the craft. Teaching is relational, responsive and gloriously human.

Tonight will be my 50th time seeing The Wonder Stuff. @mileshuntTWS already seen them in Newcastle this tour. Fifty gigs, a lot of years, a lot of memories and still absolutely buzzing for it. Scarborough Spa tonight. Fingers crossed for “Can’t Shape Up”

Just checking this data with you @dan_ofsted as this is why there is mistrust. This is what we’re seeing yet the data you pushed tells us something different
The latest Ofsted data (n = 3,189 schools) reveals a persistent association between deprivation and weaker curriculum and teaching judgements. Among secondary schools, those serving the most disadvantaged communities were nearly 4 times as likely to be graded below expected as those serving the least disadvantaged communities. Does this new framework STILL penalise disadvantaged schools? gov.uk/government/statistica…

Give ten great actors the same script and you’ll get ten different performances. Why? Because expertise lies in interpretation, judgement and responsiveness, not simply reading the words correctly. The comparison actually undermines the argument it’s meant to support.

Actors use scripts, musicians use scores, surgeons follow protocols. So what? It’s a rubbish analogy because teaching isn’t a performance or a procedure. Great teaching is responsive. It requires expertise, adaptation and professional judgement.
Actors use scripts. Musicians use sheet music. Surgeons follow established procedures. Why are scripts for teachers treated as an affront to professionalism? @ehanford explains why Direct Instruction uses them.

You could spend hours just exploring the #Endpapers. It feels as stunning as The Arrival on first read. So much to see and think about.

It is full of astounding visual storytelling and is total tour-de-force. It explores what “home” really means through memory, imagination and extraordinary images. Strange, dreamlike and utterly captivating. Look at the sequence below.

Trust is hard won and easily lost. Ofsted can say it has always considered context, but that claim doesn't reflect the experience of many school leaders. Dismissing those concerns rather than acknowledging them risks making the trust gap wider, not narrower.
