Media reporting on ‘science of reading’ is generally problematic & such reporting ‘has damaging consequences for the teaching of Early reading’ The science is not the problem, the reporting on & narrow interpretation is. To learn more, please read: tinyurl.com/y4e5eepx

Once again, frustrating but not surprising SOR advocates either don't read or read poorly. Responses to this reveal flaws of SOR as *movement* and *policy* Stories Grounded in Decades of Research: What We Truly Know about the Teaching of Reading radicalscholarship.com/2023/… 1/

Truth, colleagues.
When advocacy is driven by missionary zeal instead of credible claims and nuance it is reduced into the political system and causes great harm: Youngkin, DeWine, and Walter as exhibits A, B, C SOR becomes phonics and back-to-basics and merges with the book/curriculum banning

Republicans aren’t afraid of “Critical Race Theory,” they are afraid of critical thinking. They know the biggest threat facing their party is a new multi-racial generation of young people unafraid to speak truth to power. That’s why they are waging a war on America’s teachers.

Take just a few minutes to scratch beneath the surface of "scientific" SOR charade is filled with market interests (LETRS, CORE, O-G, etc.), think tank representatives (mostly right-wing), and no distinction between media articles/podcasts/surveys and scientific research

Whose SOR? That's the whole point of the blog. There are MANY MANY researchers who do not accept your "uncomfortable truths". You can't claim settled science when that many scientists still have major questions. To make that claim is misleading and false.

Calling multiple cueing "guessing" is the same sort of lie as the caricatures of CRT in the anti-CRT movement If you have to lie to make a case, then you have no case -fin- 12/12

Moats took issue with these reports and had their titles changed so it wouldn't implicate LETRS. Still, even research by Tillman & others showed no impact on practice. docs.google.com/document/d/1…
States are spending 10s of MILLIONS of $$ to train teachers with LETRS without research showing training needed LETRS increased teacher confidence but has NO IMPACT on student learning Brilliant use of "science"
