“ahead of disclosure” 👀
OpenAI models helped researchers—operating as part of our Patch the Planet initiative—discover critical security flaws in PHP, an open-source programming language used to run an estimated 70% of websites.
Over the past two months, we led a coalition of maintainers, researchers, and security providers to prepare fixes and protections ahead of disclosure. This duration was necessary because the fix was quite intricate and required a major change to the PHP engine. Every site using PHP can now safely upgrade their version to stay secure, in addition to applying mitigations from various security vendors.
Due to the severity of these flaws and PHP’s widespread use, we consider this bug to be one of the most impactful vulnerabilities in recent memory. It also marks a new phase, where AI can find security bugs with internet-scale impact.
This is an example of the Defender’s Window in action: to our knowledge, frontier AI was able to find this vulnerability ahead of attackers, giving defenders time to prepare.

Readers added context they thought people might want to know
OpenAI may claim a role in the coordinated response and patching process. But the initial discovery and exploit development, however, occurred several months earlier by an independent researcher.

I think the question of alignment depends on how we all start treating each other and all life on this planet. We want AI to maintain human values but look at the few humans who wield their power to control the rest of us.
If we want alignment I think we all need to get our shit together or else why should we expect AI to treat us any differently than we’ve historically treated intelligence we consider lesser than our own?

If you are a lab researcher, I urge you to consider what the next few years will actually feel like. Do you want to kick off a superintelligent RL run without a rigorous understanding of its mind? Should you put your head down because “it’s happening anyway” - or take this moment to call for different conditions?
most of how to think with AI is really just how to keep track of your shit and articulate your ideas.
It’s so fun

claude code in cursor is like body doubling but for thinking. you + your files +AI all in the same space.
(if you can write a note you can work with markdown in the terminal)
On the one hand we’re worrying about losing agency to AI (of our thinking, our creativity, our jobs, our world), and on the other the tech world is saying we should build everything for Agents now. Seems like if we want to retain agency we should take a 50/50 humans+AIs approach.
knowledge is power and we’re being sold convenience in exchange for owning our own context.
we should all have agency over our own thinking (in the form of local files) and learn how to use cutting edge tech in a non-technical way. no need to park your shit in a corporate cloud.
thinking in binary is weird because it boxes in the shape of your ideas, like wearing voluntary mind blinders

People are traveling, gathering together, barbecuing, celebrating the 250th anniversary of this nation in various ways. And then we have this…
An American service member using his right to free speech, guaranteed in our nation’s constitution. A right given to all of us every day. Regardless of your political affiliation, read or watch Major Jason Watson’s full statement. It’s powerful. He has served and is serving. He is speaking up and out, and for that he was arrested.
Free speech, freedom of religion, a free press, the freedom to vote for who you choose, the freedom to love who you choose. These are all things we celebrate on our nation’s birthday. They are what makes us a democracy, among many other things. So as you gather, as you grill, as you plan your day, think of Major Watson, think of the freedoms you hold dear, and don’t just celebrate them, but make sure generations to come will have these rights as well! 🇺🇸
main loop = curiosity + conversation + capture
(this applies to AI but also thinking in general; I refer to these as the 3 Cs of raw-clauding)
conversation is a different posture than most people are used to but if all you want is to extract output from AI and use it in tool-mode you’re missing out on building your thinking and curiosity muscles (back-and-forth exploration is how idea shapes emerge)
