"The economic benefits of keeping grasslands intact, of supporting sustainable grazing, are really significant. But, the data on those economic benefits are just sparse and hard to come by, and not well enough understood. So continued digging in on what those numbers are, and making them better understood, and delivering that back to producers is really, really needed." Einstein & Savory Just as Einstein changed physics with relativity, Savory changed land stewardship with holistic management. Space and time can’t be separated anymore than can animals, soil, and climate. These aren’t things. They’re systems. One implies the others. "Where the biggest opportunity is" I was impressed with the comments from Andy Jarvis of the Bezos Earth Fund while at Climate Week in New York City recently. The session was titled "Financing Low Emission Livestock and Grazing Systems to Sustainably Address Growing Demand." The event link is here event.sciencesummitnyc.org/l… Andy had a good understanding of rangelands' potential, which I found encouraging. Nice to see at a conference on climate. "Extensive rangelands is actually where the biggest opportunity is for productivity gains, for sustainable production ... for sequestering carbon, for protecting biodiversity, for supporting water. It’s all of these things." Happy Labor Day! I hope you had a wonderful end of summer day. I was honored to be in the Labor Day parade in Thetford, Vermont. The oldest running parade in the state, or so the legend goes.

Zoom registration soil4climate-org.zoom.us/web… Title: Grazing for Soil Health and Climate Change Mitigation, an Interview and Q&A with Dr. Jason Rowntree, Michigan State University Description: Dr. Jason Rowntree, Michigan State University CS Mott Professor of Sustainable Agriculture and Director of Center for Regenerative Agriculture discusses his most recent paper: "Impact of 10 years of adaptive multi-paddock grazing on soil carbon and beef's greenhouse gas footprint in the US Upper Midwest"  Please join us! Zoom registration soil4climate-org.zoom.us/web… Dr. Jason Rowntree canr.msu.edu/people/dr_jason… Paper sciencedirect.com/science/ar…  Highlights from paper On-farm beef GHG emissions were combined with data from 11-year SOC monitoring. Adaptive multi-paddock (AMP) grazing was used in the grazing phases measured. SOC accrual was estimated conservatively by combining measured and modeled outputs. AMP grazing cut beef GHG emissions by 34–41% under the measure + model approach. SOC accrual from AMP grazing may offer decade-scale GHG offsetting benefits. Results "AMP-grazed pastures accrued an estimated 0.52 Mg C ha−1 yr−1, based on a conservative SOC estimate informed by field measurements and model outputs. Incorporating this SOC change into the LCA reduced net GHG intensities to ∼17 kg CO2-e kg CW−1 for both systems, corresponding to 41% (AMP-GF) and 34% (AMP-FL) reductions relative to their baselines." It was another big week in Bluffton- The City of Atlanta might have closed down I-285, but our winter calving herd shut down Arlington Road! The pollinators have been working hard, too! The General Store still has plenty of delicious produce, including some of the best strawberries you'll ever eat! Our goats have been keeping the fence lines clean- this time of year, their work is never done.

PLANT-BASED TO SAVE THE CLIMATE? ✅ Plant-based diets lead to small gains With 0.2-0.8 t CO₂e saving/y, plant-based eating isn't the major climate solution some claim it to be. On a 9-15 t CO₂e footprint, this equals 1–6% reduction, depending on dietary restrictiveness.

Consumers reject "lab-grown meat" and that industry is clearly going nowhere as the "alt protein" investment bubble is deflating, so it's now going to the dogs.

Hooves of Hope YouTube Playlist Dear Colleagues, It is a great privilege to present this YouTube playlist of the Hooves of Hope webinar from this past Earth Day, April 22. In recognition of Earth Day and the International Year of Rangelands and Pastoralists (IYRP), Hooves of Hope was powerful gathering at the intersection of people, planet, and purpose — where scientists, pastoralists, and policymakers explored how wisely managed grazing systems can restore rangelands, contribute meaningfully to climate solutions, and significantly enhance livelihoods for regional people. Speaker Sequence: * Seth J. Itzkan, M.S. - Introduction - Webinar Host, Director, Soil4Climate Inc., * Badi Besbes, PhD - Welcome and Opening Remarks - Chief of Sustainable Animal Production, Feed, & Genetics (UN FAO) * Siboniso (Boni) Moyo, PhD - Keynote Address - Deputy Director General - Research, Partnerships and Impact, International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) * Saverio Krätli, PhD - Editor of Nomadic Peoples Journal; Pastoralism and Climate Change Working Group, UN FAO Global Alliance for the International Year of Rangelands and Pastoralists (IYRP) * Seth J. Itzkan - Maasai Lands Restoration Project Overview - Webinar Host, Director, Soil4Climate Inc., * Dalmas Tiampati - Maasai Land and Community Steward, Founder, Maasai Center for Regenerative Pastoralism, Kenya * N’dinga (Laizer) Orkeyaroi - Founder and Director Tanzania Eco Warriors Initiatives -TEWI, Building Climate Resilience in Northern Tanzania through Women’s Empowerment & Regenerative Agriculture, Tanzania * Leigh Winowiecki, PhD - Global Research Leader: Soil and Land Health at World Agroforestry (CIFOR-ICRAF), Co-lead Coalition of Action 4 Soil Health (CA4SH) * Jason Rowntree, PhD - CS Mott Professor of Sustainable Agriculture; Director, Center for Regenerative Agriculture, Michigan State University (MSU). Research focus is identifying the metrics and management that reflect ecological improvement in grazing land systems youtube.com/playlist?list=PL…
