This is Pauline Lumumba, the woman who watched them kill her husband and then walked half-naked in protest. You may not have seen the photo, but it shows a Congolese 🇨🇩 woman, bare-chested, with her hair shaved, walking in the street crying, with a child tied on her back. That woman is Pauline Opangu Lumumba, the wife of Patrice Lumumba, in 1961.
Patrice was only 35 years old and had been Prime Minister of Congo for just 67 days. His crime was that he declared, "Congo is not Belgium's property. Our gold, our copper, and our diamonds will feed our children." Because of those words, Belgium, America, and his own army chief, Mobutu, decided that he must die. On January 17, 1961, they took Patrice, together with Maurice Mpolo and Joseph Okito, to Katanga.
Pauline recounts what happened to him in harrowing detail. She said they beat him for hours, pulled out his teeth, and forced him to eat his own speech papers. Then a Belgian 🇧🇪 officer, Gerard Soete, shot him. After that, they cut his body into pieces with a saw and poured acid over it to dissolve him, so that no grave would ever exist. There was no body, no grave, only acid.
When they told Pauline, she did not scream. In Congolese tradition, she shaved her hair to mourn her husband. She removed her top to show the world, "You have stripped me of my husband. I have nothing left." Then she walked barefoot from Leopoldville to the place where they killed him, a journey of 1,000 km, with her baby on her back, singing his name all the way.
Mobutu, who took part in killing her husband, went on to become President for 32 years with US support. Belgium kept Lumumba's gold tooth as a souvenir in a police station until 2020. Patrice Lumumba died because he wanted a united Africa, like Gaddafi. Pauline died in 2014, still waiting for his body to be buried, and she never remarried. That is the price of saying, "Africa for Africans." And you still think Africa's poverty is because we are lazy.

WCK's #ChefsForMidEast teams were forced to leave our kitchen in Marwanieh, Lebanon after increased strikes made it unsafe for us to stay. Today, as the situation has become safer, our teams have returned to Marwanieh and are once again serving families in the region. Hear from our teammates about the importance of showing up for these communities.

In Gaza, winter means being displaced all over again. Please donate now: chuffed.org/project/113222-t…
Today on November 7, heavy rains in Gaza City completely submerged Yasser’s family tent. The mattresses they slept on were soaked. Every piece of clothing inside, including the children’s clothes, was wet. Their family had already been displaced. Now the tent they depended on for shelter is gone, too. And this is the case now for over 150,000 families.
While so many of us are warm and dry, children in Gaza are watching floodwater seep into the places they’re supposed to sleep. How is it acceptable that a family can lose everything, start over in a tent, and then lose what little they have left in a single night?
Please give to The Sameer Project’s winter campaign in our General Fund. Families need dry bedding, warm clothes, and shelter from the rain now: chuffed.org/project/113222-t…

Chilling observation about the Supreme Court judges and Palestine Action 😨
The only ground allowed to be heard in Supreme Court appeal was balance between countering terrorism and freedom of speech and assembly.
The judges referenced terrorism, terrorist or national security 60 times.
They mentioned freedom of speech zero times.

I admit that I completely broke down today. I cried uncontrollably. I couldn’t hold myself together after witnessing what I saw with my own eyes.
Today, we went to film a journalistic report inside the displacement tents along the seashore. I swear, what we witnessed was beyond what any human being should have to endure.
I saw men crying bitterly. Men I had never seen cry when they lost their children or when their homes were destroyed. Today, I saw them crying because they were powerless to do the simplest thing: protect their children from the water and the cold.
We spoke to families who told us they had spent the entire night carrying their children in their arms after floodwater covered the floors of their tents and soaked their mattresses. They couldn’t find a single dry place to put their children. They couldn’t even give them a few hours of sleep.
I saw children no older than five, without proper clothes to protect them from the cold, without heating, and without a dry place to sleep. Children shivering inside tents that cannot keep out the rain, protect them from the wind, or provide even the most basic sense of safety.
What more must happen for this world to act? How much more suffering must people endure before someone remembers that they are human beings?
I am sick of this world. I am sick of its hypocrisy and empty slogans. To hell with a world that talks endlessly about human rights while leaving children to drown inside their tents. To hell with everyone who has witnessed this suffering and chosen silence, and to hell with the governments and institutions that have the power to act but continue to turn their backs on us.

Families in Gaza are drowning right now. This is exactly what I repeatedly warned about over the past few days. I published dozens of posts, raising the alarm about this day and the rain that would flood tents and make people's suffering even worse.
Now, everything we feared is happening. Tents are flooded, families are drowning in rainwater, and damaged buildings are at risk of collapsing on top of those living inside.
I cannot describe the extent of this abandonment. No words are enough to capture this scene. We warned, we cried out, and we pleaded, but families were left alone to face this disaster. It is heartbreaking and deeply disappointing.
