“The real test for the government is making sure that the social and community infrastructure is in place to keep up with the thousands of additional residents who’ll eventually live around those stations.”
"Bankstown has been earmarked for 14,000 extra homes; 15,000 will be split across Punchbowl and Wiley Park; 18,000 across Belmore and Lakemba; substantial increases in density have also been targeted for Campsie, Canterbury, Dulwich Hill and Marrickville"

"A new pedestrian and cycling route, the MetroWay, is also being built between Sydenham and Bankstown. Similar in concept to the Inner West GreenWay, the project is due to open in 2028."
Awesome

In case you're wondering why Sydney needed it: traffic at Kingsford Smith more than tripled since 1990, but the limits haven't moved since 1997. Excited to try the new airport - it looks beautiful!

Imagine if JFK had to close every night at 11pm. Sydney's main airport does.
Today Sydney opened a second airport, and it never closes.
Sydney started looking for a second airport in 1946. Kingsford Smith sits 9 km from the city, boxed in by Botany Bay. When a third runway opened in 1994, the noise backlash was so bad that within three years the curfew was written into law and flights were capped at 80 an hour.
Since then passengers have more than tripled, to 44 million before Covid, on the same land, under the same caps.
Western Sydney International is 43 km west, and it can fly all night. It starts small, with a handful of Jetstar and Air New Zealand flights a day. The real test is Nov 23, when Singapore Airlines starts a daily A350 that leaves at 11:55pm, a time Kingsford Smith can't allow. Vietnam, Bali, Fiji, and Doha follow by the end of 2027.
The catch: there's no train until December 2027. For now it's a bus or a drive down the M12.
Within 10 years, I think most new long-haul flights to Sydney will start at the new airport, not the old one.
"I haven’t had it so bad. I moved to Campsie from Sydney’s eastern suburbs late last year and have been held hostage by the chaos lottery these pink buses induce for only the past 12 months. Longtime neighbours of mine have suffered much longer."
"The buses have made the already clogged section of Canterbury Road between the Cooks River and the RSL so bad during peak hour that my friends and I now call it “the Canterbury crawl”.
Its annoying seeing Labor partu ministers celebrating the opening, they didn't endure this
"Then there are the residents of the tight suburban thoroughfares along these routes who, for the last two years, have been forced to acclimatise to the dreaded hum of heavy vehicles bowling through streets too narrow to accommodate them."
Yep
