as someone who has lived through a thousand fandoms and followed ships that once burned bright only to eventually fizzle out, i think it's unfortunately much harder for anything to happen, or for them to take things to the next level, when they're part of the professional sports world they are. you can't even compare it to singers or actors, because professional athletes depend so heavily on sponsorships, their clubs and the people who pay their salaries and their supporters (mainly conservative men). maybe one day, when they're retired, we'll start hearing stories without names attached, but we'll know exactly who they're talking about. and even though spain is a very open-minded country when it comes to the lgbtq+ community, i don't think it's nearly as simple as people make it out to be. we don't even know whether either of them would feel comfortable coming out, assuming they're part of the community in the first place. there have been professional athletes who passed away and only afterwards did we find out that they were queer. i think that alone says a lot about how difficult it can be to navigate that world when you don't fit the mold of what it is expected of a professional athlete, especially for pedri who's already considered one of the most important midfielders on barcelona's story, think of what could happen if one day it came out that this dude who's a hero and an inspiration to many is not straight, it would erase his legacy and all that he achieved and he would become the gay or bisexual or whatever midfielder who played for barcelona, not the magician.
