With mention of baseball sweeps in the air, it’s worth recalling the 1976 Big Red Machine swept the Phillies (3-0) and Yankees (4-0) outscoring them 41-19. The Reds out-homered them 7-2, hit 15 doubles, 6 triples, stole 12 bases and drew 27 walks in 7 games.

Michigan would be undefeated and rated top-5 with Davis Warren at QB and Chip Lindsey as OC.

If the 2026 MLB season is proof that small-market teams are not at a structural disadvantage, then it is also proof that Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and Cal Raleigh are two of the worst players in baseball.

During the last 2 CBA eras. Small Markets have made the championship series 8 times. Zero World Series. Major Markets 28 times. 6 World Series. I’m glad in 2026 Small Markets got it done- but miss all of us with the “SEE- There’s not an advantage”. Please. Stop.

Career: .237/.293/.344, run production 20% below league average. 2023-2026, produced 0.0 WAR. Giving Cabrera a major league contract is a clear signal from the Reds that nothing in their approach to roster building will change. More dreadful mediocrity. More of the same. Awful.
The Reds have agreed to terms on a one-year Major League contract with INF/OF Oswaldo Cabrera, avoiding arbitration.

The Brewers are playing small ball, in that they're bashing the hell out of the small ball over the fence to score runs

Major League Baseball wants a salary cap and says it's to ensure smaller-market, lower-payroll teams can win in the postseason. Milwaukee, Cleveland and Tampa Bay are winning without one. Free at ESPN, how to reconcile the 2026 postseason and cap talk: espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/5016…

Although, I suppose "we will continue to build this team around mediocrity, underachievement, out-of-date thinking and curb shopping with a goal of finishing no higher than third in our division" wouldn't sell many season tickets. But at least it's an ethos and honest.

Seriously, are there organizations other than the Cincinnati Reds that so consistently fail to reach their own stated organizational goals yet suffer no accountability or repercussion for their ownership or management failure?

The team Nick Krall "built around defense" gets zero of 30 Gold Glove nominees. Only two other NL teams (PHI, SFG) were shut out. Meanwhile, every other team in the Reds division got at least two. More evidence the Reds organization is complacent with mediocrity and failure.
The 2026 National League @RawlingsSports Gold Glove Finalists 🤩 Winners will be announced on Sunday, November 1st on @ESPN

I like this.
MLB has proposed returning to a 154-game Regular Season, best-of-seven Division Series, and opponent selection in the Wild Card and Division Series Starting in 2029, shortening the season to a 154-game schedule would create a standard weekly off day benefiting player health, and it would allow the addition of up to 8 more Postseason games by moving to a best-of-seven Division Series format Beginning in 2027, higher-seeded clubs in the Wild Card and Division Series would select their opponents

Hmm … Francona managed *under* the Reds Pythagorean number in 2025. In his 11 seasons with Cleveland he was under four seasons and over four seasons. Net, his team’s record was 6 games worse than its run differential. If that’s why Karl hired him, he’s an idiot. It’s random.
The pythag for the Reds was 64-98. They ended up 75-87. THAT right there is the Tito Effect and is exactly WHY Krall brought him in (+ 11 WINS). If the reds pythag next year can hang around ~74 wins we should win 85 games and waltz into the playoffs.

Owning the Reds is not a commitment to the city. Doing absolutely everything possible in order to deliver a Reds championship is a commitment to the city. These are different things.

Phil: “blah, blah, blah … platitude … blah, blah, blah … strategy … blah, blah, blah … (false statement about leaving it to baseball guys) … blah, blech” Also: We’re not changing anything, suckers. We’re re-running the same failed strategy. Where ya’ gonna go?
Phil Castellini on why the Reds are "sticking with (their) strategy," his role in the organization, empowering the front office, how payroll gets set and whether they'd go over-budget again in 2027. charlieschalkboard.substack.…

For the third time in the past four years, Redsfest will not be held this offseason. A statement from the team says "We look forward to bringing Redsfest back in 2027 during its traditional early December timeframe." No reason for skipping this offseason was given.
