Confettigate: A Statement From Just Stop Oil The lady who threw confetti in Bruton yesterday was upholding a tradition that is common across many cultures. We absolutely defend the right for people to throw confetti (of whatever colour) at weddings and other celebrations. If it was a form of protest — which is yet to be established — we applaud it and thank the person concerned. It was peaceful and not especially disruptive, but got massive media attention for Just Stop Oil’s demand. It has also helped people to recall that George Osborne, one of the main architects of economic austerity, is directly responsible for over 300,000 excess deaths, and that — as a newspaper editor — he was responsible for some of the most egregious climate-denying nonsense ever to darken the pages of mainstream mass media. However, as much as we applaud the use of orange confetti at this wedding, we were not responsible. Perhaps the press could focus on something more important now? Like the current government’s plans to licence over 100 new oil and gas projects, which will result in excess deaths the likes of which we have never seen. Or the fact that the UN Secretary General has said that ‘climate change is out of control’ as we’ve just seen the hottest average temperatures since records began. Or the fact that Canadian wildfires have now burned down an area the size of Portugal. We are in catastrophically dangerous territory and the press have a moral responsibility to inform and educate people as to the causes of the crisis so that we can take action to defend ourselves. In 2023, it is simply criminal not to check your facts.

🌡️☀️BREAKING☀️🌡️ Record sunshine and heat and over 15,000 deaths in Europe, but no mention of the strongest regional climate forcing! This is gross negligence.

I turned on the TV earlier at the exact moment when Sophie Rayworth said "And this is all we are going to be seeing for the next 5 days" as mourners started to pass the Queen lying in state. At least she was brutally honest about the BBC's intentions.

There was no RMT picket line in Scarborough today, so climate activists, peace activists and trade unionists mounted a solidarity picket. We collected £41 for the strike fund. Trains, not bombs! Public transport not climate change! @RMTunion

What's extraordinary about capitalism is that it produces inequality and ecological breakdown and then tries to sell itself as the only reasonable solution to inequality and ecological breakdown.

The press have been screaming #DontLookUp for years… Don’t look up at the billionaires and their corporations, manipulating you and devouring nature! Do look down at the protesters stopping hypothetical ambulances or the migrants taking your hypothetical job.

Future generations will look back at our generation & just laugh that there were political leaders like Trump, Johnson, Netanyahu & Bolsonaro - yet it was a jam-making anti-war leader with an interest in manhole covers who the UK media demonised as the threat to national security

Incredible - and frightening - photos are emerging from Mallacoota, a small town in the East Gippsland region of Victoria, where about 4000 people are sheltering near water, protected by CFA tankers. Visit @theage's live blog for updates: ow.ly/RkrM50xKk6g #vicfires

The biggest and worst news humanity has ever received - the collapse of life on Earth - was revealed by the #IPBES report yesterday. Only two UK newspapers (Guardian and Independent) carried it on their front pages. As for the rest ... you've guessed it. Thread/
